The iFi Audio NEO iDSD Balanced DAC/Amp stakes its claim to fame in the audiophile world as one of the earliest adopters of all the major high-resolution formats: DSD512, 768-kilohertz PCM, 384 kilohertz MQA, and a whopping 96 kilohertz over Bluetooth. This, when taken as a set, makes it an excellent, full-featured DAC/amp combo capable of tackling as much resolution as you can throw at it Read More
No audiophile here; just bumbling along trying to figure out what i like, and what makes sense to consider for upgrades. Current desktop/work-station setup: 2019 MacbookPro; Swan HiVi M50W 2.1 speakers M1 (MIII is the current version, on the Swan site at $400); HRT Music Streamer DAC. Most listening is through speakers as opposed to headphones (and is music, not gaming or movies). Some podcasting endeavors might be in the future, so that ratio could change (more headphone use).
This iFi Neo seems well reviewed, and the Drop price is very good compared to other sellers at the moment. Im wondering if i'm going to hear a significant difference moving from the HRT to this without making any other changes/upgrades to my system. I'm always scanning for speaker upgrades, but am pretty happy for now with the M50Ws given their size and what i paid for them, so new speakers might not happen right away. Given the law of diminishing returns, it seems i'd be pushing $1,000 speakers to gain the next noticeable level of improvement.
Any advice/guidance appreciated.
Sorry for stupid questions, I've been using internal PC card (Asus Xonar) most of my life and never had external DAC.
Q1: I see front button switch between Bluetooth and USB inputs. Does the BT device stay connected when I switch the mode to USB and listen to the other device for some time. In other words, can I have two separate devices connected and just switch between them with a delay no longer than 1 second?
Q2: How to switch the output between connected headphones and connected speakers? I don't see any button for that. Would both connected outputs always play? I don't want to be powering down the speakers every time. Also, when speakers are on, I don't see the reason to output via headphone jack.
I’ve been using this as a dac only in a $15K home audio system for several years now and absolutely love it. It’s clearly better than the dac inside the bluesound node gen 3 — and you’d likely have to spend over a grand on another dac to do better. Lots of top end air and very satisfying soundstaging.
I have had this is in the past and sold it because I wanted to keep up with "The Jones'", but I regret that decision. This small, beautifully crafted device was a sonic revelation. I used it with a Mac, as well as in my main stereo system and the results were just lovely. The screen is small as it's designed to be used in near field, but I found that I rarely needed to know what was on the screen and was able to turn it off. The utility that ifi was able to fit into this device, and in such a small package, is very impressive. Though I didn't use Bluetooth for anything, I did try it once and found that the reception was fair and the quality was good, but like it's bigger sibling, the reception/bluetooth/wifi (for the streamer version) is a liiitle lacking. Wired usage 100%.
If anyone else is curious about my experiences, or wants to ask a question lmk, I will do my best to remember my experience with it. Note: I (stupidly) sold this on almost 8 months ago, so bear that in mind with any sonic/audio quality assessments.
