In the world of mechanical keyboard switches, no name is bigger than Cherry. Here, we’re featuring the venerable Cherry MX Clear switches, historically made with black housings—but available in the RGB style with clear housings for the first time ever on Drop Read More
They are my first mechanical switches for my first DIY hotswap keyboard (preonic). Most had straight pins with only a few that were bent out of the box. After the build, I realized that two keys were not working at all. It was because I had bent the pins when installing the switches. It was easy to swap them out with unbent leftovers, even without any specialized tool.
Everything works fine now and I very much like the tactility of the Cherry MX Clear. I think I overpaid by going with RGB switches because I do not need the RGB feature.
I was lucky and got a bunch of really smooth switches, the weight is great and they start off chalky but smooth out and get better with a couple of days of typing in. They lube well and aren't hard to open, just be careful with the legs, cause its hard to get more top housings apparently.
I recommend filming them with regular thickness films from Keebo, I used their thick films by accident, but it was fine, just over kill. And of course 205g0 for lube. They work great in my Keychron K8 RGB, colors are bright and consistent, and they sound good when the springs are figured out.
Downsides is that these have really bad spring ping stock and lubbed, and oil doesn't help either, so just swap the springs to something better quality to save the hassle of these stock springs. cherry gold plated or some other springs would improve these immensely.
If you like tactiles but want something more than browns but less than Zealios, these are for you. 9/10 would put my self in physical pain lubeing 90 more switches
I am a new kid on the block when it comes to mechanical keyboards. I ordered the Keychron K2V2 hot-swappable as it seemed the perfect entry level keyboard. The Gateron Brown where to 'light' for me, and I used to have a Apo with Cherry MX Browns that wasn't what I was looking for either. They were to light and not tactile enough. These switches have an incredible bump in them and are a little less noisy when compared to the Gaterons/Cherry Browns. It's very suitable in an office setting and are a great option if you are dealing with bottom-ing out to much. The tactility is CRAZY good! Another note for if you are considering these switches is that it is crazy difficult to get these type of switches, let alone these switches that are RGB friendly. (I am pretty sure this is the only place you can get these).
psmgeelenif you have gateron browns or cherry browns you can switch out the springs into the clears, and then you'll have ergo clears. probably not the best for office settings since it will mean that you'll start bottoming out again but it's something to experience for sure.
I bought these with the intention of making Ergo Clears. I’d done a bunch of the spring swaps when I realized the housing was insanely scratchy even lubed. I opened them up again and switched the housing with that of the Gat Browns I was getting the springs from and it was a massive improvement. The non-RGB clears are much better than these but if you need switches that are translucent try something else.
Honestly, most people complain about the heavier spring, but that is the part I love most.
They are sufficiently tactile and have a nice, heavy feel.
Once lubed, they become the perfect switch for me and the actuation force needed feels snappy but not too sharp.
I’m not your average gamer (or a gamer in general), so take this with a grain of salt.
I haven't found anything that I like as well as clears and the fact that these support backlights is HUGE! I wasn't sure about them and now I just wish I had ordered more.
Cherry MX Clear have always been one of my favorite tactile switches, and seeing them come in clear RGB housings had me really excited.
I was nervous the RGB housing wouldn't be as bright, or diffuse as much light as the Halo switches, but the Cherry MX Clear RGB housing does an AMAZING job of amplifying and diffusing the light behind the keycaps. Super happy with my purchase.
It does exactly what it says it does, but there's a pinging noise from the spring
It's pretty scratchy when you first get them, but that goes away after a while. The spring makes a pinging noise. You'll hear some vibration from the spring for about half a second if you pause after typing a sentence. Other than this, good switches.
