I've been most impressed with the Shogun. It was an impulse buy, admittedly. I don't regret it in the slightest now. I absolutely love the way the keys sound when typing.

harrisonfordIt's still not worth 500$. There are specific hand-lubing services that do great jobs for pretty cheap- I'd know, I've used them. Also, having godlike sound isn't worth a half grand, there are plenty of keyboards that are only around $200 that WILL sound better than this- with those you have options. As Kevin mentioned, their foam is proprietary and you can *again* do much better with silicon mixing and/or better/different mounting styles than their lazy tray-mounting.
It's less about actually using the kana to write in Japanese with the keyboard (because, yeah, it's way more common to use Romaji with an IME) but it's the principle that they used the characters with a non-Japanese layout as an "esthetic" choice, which means missing characters like "ro", since those are not on a US-based layout.
If you're going to put Kana on the keyboard, commit and use a Japanese keyboard layout that includes all the keys.
drasticactionsLooked at the keycap set. It's normally on the Escape key, but since this keyboard uses the stylized Escape key, it's absent. Mystery solved.
OOL:
I'm missing something. The Alt-high profile is $180 (rn), the pandas are $85 for 70, a case is $25, and the samurai keycaps are $100. Why the extra cost? What am I missing? (390 vs ~500)
-- even for the extra cost of changing keycaps and adding stabilizers, I still lost the original keycaps that would come on the ALT (right?).
sdwaterHand lubing them yourself is usually better most of the time though, you don't know if the switches you receive are going to be consistent or not. We also don't know what kind of lubricant is being used either and that could change the feel of the switches dramatically. Dampening of a board is very easy to do, you can go to a local store and grab packaging foam or aka PE foam for quite cheap as well. $110 for those is quite stupid actually.
Imagine spending half a grand on a Drop ALT when even the base board is a poor value compared to more recent options.
$500 for a fixed integrated plate, only 3 pin switch support, north facing leds.
They give you different stabs (still clip in), lubed switches, and a keycap set that has been cloned many times for much cheaper.
Not to mention the hilarity of a Japanese keyset missing Ro (ろ). Maybe we'll leave E off the roman alphabet sets next.
No mention of the type of lube or foam used, but when asked below, Drop tells us this "hand tuned" $500 keyboard "isn't for enthusiasts". At least we can agree on that lol.
agreed. It's a bummer too because I honestly like their keyboards. Somebody gave me an ALT as my first mechanical keeb and I have a CTRL that I use as my main and prefer the design/look of these to many of the alternatives (just personal preference) but they seem totally content to just wither away. And it's not that they are just getting out played. Other companies have stepped up big time for sure but Drop has just given up, totally shafted their customers/users too. Literally impossible to get any sort of update from them. Now they are trying to pawn this stuff off for $500! lol. I'll go get a Mode 65 for that price
Hopefully that's actually true, and hinted by in the GitHub Issue. But, Drop hasn't done a good job at this at all. There's still no EEPROM support and how long has this board been released?
The situations around the mech keys has been rough too. I think I'm done with Drop at this point. I used to recommend it to people.
"Community" is only marketing to Drop. I plan on not supporting financially going forward.
