Has anyone gotten this device to work stable on a Raspberry Pi? I got it to work, but start getting cracking sounds after a while. It grinds to a complete halt soon after.

Fair point, I meant only that it is the star of this show, not a star amongst all of the field. That's why I added "...on this stick" The entire PCB design and possibly the run dates back to 2011, so the industry has moved along a fair piece since.

The real star on this stick is the Tenor TE7022L it is a low-power USB 2.0 full-speed compliant audio streaming controller. Spec sheet http://www.gfec.com.tw/products/tenor/te7022l

rollover"Star" ? five years ago maybe, TE7022L is well known for its incompatibility with 88.2khz, and high jitter output. and even if 'ts USB 2.0 Full speed, there is only support for Usb Audio Class 1.0.

rolloverNot so much a star, perhaps a bit player (!)....seriously, anyone looking for an "audiophile" quality usb/spdif unit should save their pennies and buy one that uses an XMOS device, not Tenor or CMedia....check DIYaudio.com for more on this topic. If you can only afford $20, then so be it, but I suspect many on this site can afford something in the $100 to $200 range, and you'd certainly hear the difference, even with a mediocre DAC....

I would never trust this little plastic toy to tranparently convert USB to SPDIF because it will probably infect the output with all the USB power noise if nothing else.

By noise I'm referring to noise being introduced through the USB connection, not noise in an analogue audio signal. USB noise can and will be transmitted through anything that's not an optical link. Basic USB transport from a PC with a standard USB cable and no galvanic isolation will result in significant degradation of audio.

Any difference or improvement in sound compared to straight USB to DAC?

crazychileIf you aren't into superstitions and black magic. Absolutely nope. This is just a plug adapter for people who don't have a USB connection on their DAC.
