These look really nice, but $160 for a set of ABS keycaps? What am I missing here?
(not trolling, genuinely curious)

Daisy_CutterQuality aside, these actually aren't GB prices, they appear to be previously manufactured kits, so that accounts for some of the price. I'd debate the previously quoted $100-$120 as that price is for GB at large quantities. MOQ prices are generally $130 (Nautilus) to $160 (Mint Dolche). Currently dropping GMK Necro is $145. Only Laser, which started at $110 has really been lower.

smobotSoooo... what I'm getting from this post is if you are aware of the importance of this drop the 180$ for it (holy shite) is just the price you pay, but for us smaller folks looking in (whose who enjoy keycaps but don't invest our savings into it) this isn't really the drop for us. I mean I'm just content getting the color and profile I want. This could buy me a whole new keyboard for the money.
SomewhatStupidBasically, yeah. It's like any kind of enthusiast community, in that there are diminishing returns and personal values. For me, I viewed it as a one time investment.
I have three keyboards. A fullsize at work, a 65% that stays at home, and a Planck that travels with me. When I first built the 65%, I knew I wanted a Pulse keyset for it, but that wasn't a set that was on offer, so I got Granite. Shortly after, the next round of Pulse happened, so I was able to buy it, and then I sold the Granite to fully recoup the cost of the Pulse. My keyboard always looked and felt good, and I was only out the initial investment.
My work computer had a combination of stock and Vortex shine through caps. When Carbon dropped, I could not for the life of me sell the Vortex's. They feel good, but they're easy to get, so there's little to no recouping the cost. It's sunk.
The Planck is currently dressed in Unicorn Vomit (caps pulled from a Signature Plastics grab bag). I still have the rest of the grab bag and I can guarantee there's at least one good Planck set in there, so there's novelty. I'll be able to sell at least at the value I put into it plus shipping when Laser arrives. So, Laser is partially paid for by keycap futures, an investment I made over a year ago.

Over priced and poorly designed.

P1MPBOT5000Lol, what's a well designed set to you? Most of these sets have been heavily copied by cheaper keyset makers due to their popularity. As far as price goes, these caps are off much higher quality than anything you find that's cheaper. Is it 3 times better than the cheaper versions of these? Probably not, but like with any consumer product, returns are diminishing, but that does not mean it's over priced

Kind of pricey... You can get 4 or 5 Tai-Hao keycap set for the same price...
Which keycap set would work for a GK64 and Keywalker 68?

Re shine, I have to agree they're not ignorable. I forget when GMK Nautilus shipped but mine is already shining pretty good. Shining keys: WERTUIO, ASDFH, and CNM. Even if all the keys were burred to same level of smoothness, the feel of a smoothed down GMK is somewhere between "Not bad" to "Icky".
My Tai-Hao Cubic keysets will, of course, suffer the same fate but these sets are much cheaper to replace. If I had to spend $150, I'd get 3 Cubic keysets and a brass plate over a GMK keyset now because a brass plate adds a lot to tactile feel.

Bro, chill out... Triggered much
I said that, in my experience with gmk sets (3) I have had no problem with shine. I'm not saying that they don't shine.
The topic of gmk keycap tactility never came up, so why bring it up. The initial question was asking why they are so much more expensive than tai-hao, and I was responding with my opinion on the different caps.
" Are you seriously claiming the mechanical keyboard community does not care about tactile feedback " I didn't claim this lol...
They're generalized statements about gmk.
People like you are the reason why people don't want to get into this hobby, we're all here for fun and to learn. You don't need to be so hostile. You can find someone to argue with you over the specific quantitative and qualitative details somewhere else.

Hmm. Well, sorry but I can't justify buying keycaps that are twice as much as my complete TKL keyboard. They don't have anything special either. I'm actually surprised that many sets have been sold.

Right, these are Originative's own works, who don't carry a lot of recognizable colorways. Skidolcha is just a Dolch version of Skidata or what that one was called. Some of the others are color variants of previous sets they also carried, but few are 'new' or use any more interesting colors as a base. Pretty sure these are only on MD because Originative is clearing inventory, at least at a discount from their original list price.

Keycaps are definitely supply and demand and you can find good unique deals out there if the colors weren't as popular. Totally possible to find high quality thick pbtcaps for $30, that were originally at a $120 group buy price. It's like addictive to treasure hunt. But, many choosing abs over pbt is usually doing so for particular colorways. Pbt is more limited. Therefore logic says that looks are worth the cost to many. I like to look at these sets but I stick with thick pbt.

Kind of a noob question: how is it even humanly possible that anything made out of ABS costs this much? I'm just not understanding why this costs almost as much as a new keyboard.

I also don't look exclusively here, but some keycap sets are only available here as they are small runs. At that point you're out of alternatives.

These caps are most certainly worth the price. They're not worth the price, to YOU. But GMK is the only manufacturer that sells caps made from the genuine cherry mold, the legend printing is the best in the business bar none, and unlike PBT, these can be made to that quality with a wider scope of colors. This isn't even mentioning the fact that when someone spends $300+ on a keyboard case itself, they often want the perfect set of keycaps for their board, which also includes sound profile, so which these are unique. I'm sure there are people saying you're insane for buying keycaps from Varmilo, when you think about how many membrane keyboards or cheap mechanical keyboards you can get for the price. It's all relative.

These are great sets but GMK needs to keep up with the times. These prices do not reflect their position in the market anymore now that more and more options are available. Paying double and triple the price of a set just for quality control will be a dated novelty when more competent manufacturers enter the market, as they already are. That being said, I do fancy a lot of GMK sets and my impatience begs me to hunt down some Oblivion and Penumbra lol.
