Looking at the internals of the pen, there's nothing to keep the converter from rotating as a whole when turning the knob. Even if it stays put, how would you know that you turned the piston and not the converter as a whole without unscrewing the barrel and checking? Might as well, just unscrew the barrel rather than the end cap and be done with it. Which is fine, btw.

Oh, I commented earlier that this seems like the best Italix yet, certainly value wise.
I recently had the opportunity to handle one and I have to say it's the best-proportioned Italix yet. Remarkably well-balanced.
If you make the Tankard available in more finishes it is sure to unseat the Essential.

First, the ship date is delayed, and now thanks to Massdrop using FedEx SmartPost (DumbPost) shipping for mine is now delayed by two days.
Seriously, Massdrop, your prices aren't that much better than what can be found anywhere else, do you really have to use shipping that makes your customers angry?

Boyce89976Well, by some miracle of logistics, my pen arrived today. I have loaded it with some Waterman Serenity Blue and it has passed all tests with flying colors. the nib is a little rough and scratchy on most normal paper, but that should smooth out with use. It was fairly easy to load the ink in the pen, just took a couple of tried to get the maximum draw from the ink well. I've tried writing as fast as I can, and it's never skipped or misbehaved, other than a couple of dry starts after leaving it idle for a couple minutes (the Waterman ink dries FAST). The pen is pretty hefty, with a nice weight and balance in the hand, and the screw-on cap is a nice touch. I wish it screwed on in the posted position, and the threads are a little rough the first couple times you unscrew the cap, but that's nitpicking. I'm very happy with the performance, feel and fit and finish of this pen, especially for the price.

Unfamiliar with the difference between Italic and Stub nibs? Here's an article that helps explain the difference, along with a photo below lifted from that article. However, Italix seems to differentiate between Cursive and Italic as if they are two different things, so I'm not sure what to think.

Hey fellow Massdrop followers.
Not meaning to kill the groove, but Mr.Pen.com has an offer to buy two (2) Italix Chaplain's Tankard Fountain Pens (40 British Pounds - $50.83 as of 12/28/18 at market close) plus ($15.76)
shipping to the US. The end total would be ($66.58) for two pens). I live in L.A., California. After taxes, two of these pens from Massdrop would cost ($76.28). I did not notice any price reduction for buying two of these pens on the Massdrop website. I know that Massdrop has no choice, when it comes to state sales tax. However it would be a savings of ($10).
The second Italix Chaplain's Tankard Fountain Pen you get from Mr. Pen will have a white finial so that the two pens are a bit different cosmetically and easy to tell apart. And of course you get to select two (2) different nibs. Massdrop's price for one (1) of these pens is excellent and cheaper than buying direct from Mr. Pen.com,
because of the ($15.76) shipping. However, if you're a pen collector like "Moi", this "TWO FOR" deal from Mr. Pen might bear some consideration.

Mr Pen's latest Italix. The lowest-priced Italix that is available with all nib grinds (unlike the Doodle). A bit smallish, but on the other hand it has the most sensible section of any Italix yet.
Oh, and yes the button filler tag is misleading. FYI, Massdrop is not to blame for that; it's what Mr Pen call the end cap-accessible converter too.

phoenixsongWell, cost doesn't really get in the way of balance. It's usually aesthetics, which is what sells, whether we want to admit it or not. But yeah, it's Mr Pen's best value yet. Especially at MD's price.

Mine just arrived and first impressions are very positive. However, is this really a Cursive Fine? Seems pretty wide for a Fine?

Jono2112I'm definitely waiting! I've never had an Italix, but from what I've read this is a very good pen even at the regular price. I generally stick to vintage pens, but this one 'spoke' to me, so I'm willing to be patient.

Saw button fill in the description and got excited because of the price and it wasn't a pen older than me. Then I saw the picture and was disappointed, just a converter filler. Still, it is a good brand just a bit misleading.

It's not a knock on the pen. Mr. Pen offers a great products. It's just I saw "button fill" and thought of an actual button filler pen and with "tankard" in it's name hoped for a large ink capacity. This pen is a captive converter and holds no more ink than any other converter fill. In the UK that may be more commonly be referred to as a button, but for me, here in the US, that's more of a knob. A button you press down on and a knob you twist. Still, it's a good deal compared to buying direct.

In fact, you still have to open it. I cannot see that much difference in unscrewing the body or the knob. It is still the same work just done on the other end of the barrel.
