I don't know why I didn't recognize this as being every bit as big as the slightly ridiculous GPB1 😳
search
I read the specs, I watched videos, but its size still came as a bit of a shock lol
Edit :
I do like this one much better though, the overall size seems much more balanced between the blade and the handle. And it's more comfortable in the hand
I have the sheepdog mini - do you know it? It's smaller than the sheepdog. I like it. I generally use smaller knives with blades around 2" when I'm out, 3" or so around home. The small hunter is also about 2".
KizerI've looked at it, but haven't handled one in person
By "bulky" I meant the overall shape though, not necessarily the length.
Similar to how I feel on the GPB1 and the Roach; both feel like bigger knives than they are (not that they're in any way small lol) because of the height of the blade more than the length
Damn. Love almost everything about this knife, but for having 0.11in blade stock, it is too thick. This would be an instant purchase for me at a handle width of 0.45in or less, but at the moment I have too many large titanium framelock Kizers.
I honestly can't figure out where all the bulk comes from. It has thinish blade stock, doesn't appear to have overthick scales or wasted space, but somehow still come in at over half and inch thick....
I've been eyeballing the roach for a while now. Glad I joined the drop (my 1st one ;) )
Now if only a few months down the road we could get the Megatherium at the same price, I'd be happy :D
Damn, i have wanted this knife for ages, and if memory serves, the current drop price of $120 is $66-68 less than the usual retail price, so I might have to scrounge up some $ in the next 5 days.
HatuletohCheapest I'm currently seeing anywhere else is white mountain, where it's about $202 after a 10% coupon code.
Seems to be $225 everywhere, and some sites listing it as discontinued
I wasn't planning another knife purchase this week, but now I may need to too
In my experience with ganzo they are amazing for the money but don't last long for me, I think it's because I use more to play with like opening and closing a lot. The pivot gets loose and no matter how much tightening or whatever you try I couldn't get the blade centered or tightened. Also the button automatic knives I had was fun but the spring broke in a couple months.
I like the stickers. You may need to use some GooGone to clean off the glue. They used to mark the blades, but Kizer is aware of the market pre-perspectives (a word I may have just invented. Please don't misunderestimate me.)
Got mine yesterday. I actually received this one and it's younger brother the roach made from VG-10. The VG-10's flipping action is smooth as silk. The S35VN is rather stiff. It's also very dull. The VG-10 will shave the hair off my arm, the S35VN won't And it barely cuts paper either. Very disappointing to pay so much for a knife and have it arrive dull.
Do you immediately have to get an oil change when you buy a new car? Do you immediately have to empty the bag when you buy a new vacuum?
A knife has ONE job, everything else is a nice-to-have. How we give knife mfg so much leeway on this is ridiculous when you consider how much money we're paying. I'm looking at you, CRK.
Spyderco use a consistent edge angle of 20 degrees. Most other knives come with all sorts of inconsistent angles even on the one blade! It's like they all grind them free hand. It really bugs me. I would prefer a consistent 20 degree angle to a sharp knife. It's much harder to fix up dodgy grind angles than it is to sharpen a dull blade with a good 20 degree grind.
AegyptiSame here.
It came lubed up. i worked it a bit, now it's a bit better.
Only thing i noticed is the detent is lacking. I can open with momentum, no action on flipper.
Did anyone else notice the micro differences between the massdrop photos and the Kizer production photos? The 2 things I saw were the jimping on the flipper tab (no jimping on Massdrop photo) and a drill through hole for the detent ball (kizer photos don't have a visible hole on the lock bar). Not a big deal in any way, especially given the awesome price. Just made me wonder if these 75 units were an early run or something like that.
The design is really awesome. I have the orange g10 vanguard model already. Very comfortable in hand.
Super minute differences, a friend of mine actually pointed them out
sproul2789I could be wrong but I think the Blade HQ photos are of early or the latest models/revisions. If you look on youtube there two version that people review. The one with no jimping and a detent hole is more common if you do a search. And even Kizer's site is of the one that looks like the Massdrop one. Knife center also has picture that looks like the Massdrop one. I personally don't really like the jimping since it's pretty useless.
