I've been collecting Lamy studio pens for a while. They are by no means the best pens on the market (they have steel nibs after all), but definitely feel like a step up from the Lamy al star. They make for a fantastic EDC pen that can take a fair bit of abuse in a pocket or bag. A great addition for anyone getting into the hobby.
A Beautiful and Comfortable Pen that Scratches and Smudges Easily
Out of the box, the pen looks just as good as it does in the photos, and for a second I thought there was a decent chance of it being my endgame. Unfortunately, a couple little issues mean I will probably look elsewhere in a year or two.
The pen is nicely balanced, and comfortable to write with with or without capping the pen. The black coating on the body looks great and doesn't smudge easily, but it's easy to scratch. I had read about the issue in other reviews, but as someone who usually takes good care of my pens I wasn't too worried. Unfortunately, the metal pocket clip is enough to scratch the cap fairly quickly by itself, even if you keep the pen separate from all other rough objects. On top of that, the metal grip gets covered in smudges pretty quickly, although I don't mind as much since it's not visible while writing.
The included ink was pretty mediocre, but I added in a converter with Iroshizuku ink in it and the nib flowed over the paper beautifully. Another issue that still bothers me slightly is that there is a lot of ink travel on the nib, which is a common complaint with LAMY pens. It mostly bothers me when trying to show it off to others.
For a pen that is supposed to be focused on looks, some of the flaws were disappointing, but the great writing experience means I'll keep using it every day until the scratches get bad enough to bother me.
I loved this pen. It wrote beautifully and smooth and was the best fountain pen I've ever owned. Especially nice looking silver pens that are quite large and heavy. I've been looking for one that wouldn't break my bank and found this one.
The Lamy studio is a beautifully built precision writing instrument. The Nib is consistent and smooth in its writing and its medium listed size matches its actual size. The cap perfectly aligns with the pen and the smooth curve of the spring and body is fantastic.
