Um.. this reminds me of the wooden racks that we used to hold test tubes back in chemistry lab lessons in school. A classmate broke one, and they school charged him something like $3 to replace it.

Of course, this comparison is a bit disingenuous because this no doubt has nicer woods, better tolerances etc.. but I still can't shake the association. Test tube rack.
I agree, and did acknowledge this upfront in my original comment. I just thought it was amusing that your pen stand was reminiscent of test tube racks back from school days.
I don't mean to belittle your work. As a craftsman I am sure you take a great deal of pride in your workmanship. However, pricing has always been about what the market can bear, and from the comments here it seems the sentiment is clear.
What type of ebony are you using that you can't get (what appears to be approximately) 1/2"x1/2"x3" for $3?
Especially if we an safely assume your thousands of dollars in shop equipment includes a table saw, so that you are cutting the legs yourself down from a 1/2"xWhatever board?
I get that there's skill, and time, and shop costs.....but the price on these (and your other stands) are waaaay up there.
If you feel your skill/brand/time is worth that upcharge, that's great, if you can get it......but don't blame it on the woods
(especially when it's the same price for walnut or bocote on the larger pieces of wood)
I feel like the negative comments on this have no idea how long it would take to make this nor the price of exotic woods. I just feel bad because I requested this drop but then realized the one I actually want is the 9 pen version.
I'm astounded that 12 people have already thrown money at this.
Two chunks of 1/4" wood with holes drilled into them, and a set of plastic looking stanchions is not worth over $100.
I rate this product 100% garbage.
GarbageManThen you only show your ignorance of exotic woods. What would make you make such a hideous comment? You don't like it, don't buy it. But your comment makes you a TROLL. You sure picked the right name.
As far as Lanier accessories go, this 15-Pen stand actually comes at a decent price on Massdrop. Still, I don't see how two slabs of wood are worth more than 20 bucks. Fine, 50 bucks, just for the brand. But 120? I feel stupid buying two glued, wooden boards for that money.
neinbitTo me, it looks like there's a bit more to it than that. The coating/what-ever-its-called goes in in multiple coats, taking time. Assuming each board takes an hour or two of crastmanship (cut, drill, coat, etc - then this isn't a surprising price, especially since it's a niche item.
I agree it's a bit higher than I'll likely support. I want to learn some crastmanship anyways, so this is a nice inspiration on something I may be able to do on my own for fun.
TheDarkTrumpetMaybe Water-Based Polyurethane as a wood finish. Maybe linseed oil. Nothing groundbreaking. I agree with you, it is not just the materials. It is also the work. But this pen rack is really quite basic. Similar craftsmanship (not necessarily as a pen rack) is sold on renaissance fairs for a fraction of the price.
I don't care how nice it may be, this is just a piece of wood with holes cut in it.
The fact that Lanier charges $100 for it is highway robbery.
Do yourself a favor. Go to amazon and search for "Wooden Test Tube Rack". Here you will find options which are nearly as nice for around $12 dollars. Take the money you didn't spend on the rack, and treat yourself to a new journal, or some new inks, or whatever else suits your fancy. Other than displaying my pens, I haven't thought once about the fact that my racks are technically built for test tubes rather than pens. They look nice, are sturdy, and cost next to nothing.
Just my .02
That's waaay too expensive. I made a stand from leftovers: 2 pieces of aluminum profile for LED strip, heat gun glue, carbon pattern vinyl film. Still there's a space for improvement though.
I used to make pistol grips from exotic wood. For all the folks who think this is too much for a pen stand, go buy the tools to build just one and then add the cost of materials and labor. You can't do that for this price.
this is a lot for this pen rack, I've seen other at a very much less price and very nice choice of woods and shapes as well. The pride were under $80 dollars american made. The pen rack would hold up to 8 pens and you put the side of hole you want for your pens. He does have cubes that hold 6 pens that can hold large pens the pen rack will not scratch or Mark up your pens. Ok ow it takes a lot of work making these pen rack the right way and the
material used as well. I don't think it's that high a bit but it depends on her labor and the cost for her material as well. No I didn't buy one yet. I am a pen reviewer and I do pens, inks, notebooks, messanger bags, men's packs and many other products, so I may buy this rack and do a review. I usually get these products from the seller to do a review and share the products and I give a honest review on them. I spen many hrs up to weeks at time yo get the right presentation for the product. But who knows I may get one and I hope it's all I've head being a Worth wel prod to purchase . Larry's Fountain Pens
