Long known for its high-end handcrafted wood pens, Lanier now offers a stand to match. This beautiful, functional upright stand is ideal for holding the pens you use every day, whether it’s on your desk at home or at work Read More
I purchased this pen stand in the Sept'17 drop (the walnut-ebony version), and I'm quite pleased with the design and quality. Sure, it's pricey compared to the $12 Eisco Labs wood test tube racks you can purchase on Amazon — I have several of those too, and they're a great value — but if you're looking for a handsome, well-made desk accessory for fine pens, I think this is a nice option. There are slight design differences that make the Lanier stand better suited to pens. The vertical spacing between the base and the upper platform is 2-3/8" on the Lanier stand, versus 2-3/4" on the test tube rack, so the Lanier is slightly better proportioned for "pocket pens", such as the Kaweco Liliput and Sport models. Likewise, the hole diameter on the Lanier is slightly smaller, 3/4" (19mm) versus 7/8" (22.2mm) on the test tube rack, so "regular" size pens are a little less wobbly in the Lanier, while still accommodating large diameter pens. Finally, the countersunk "wells" on the base of the Lanier are smaller diameter than those on the test tube rack, so they provide a slightly more assured "grip" at the base of the pen. The Lanier stand accommodates 15 pens — seven in the "front" row, and 8 in the back, with the two rows staggered. The test tube rack holds 12 pens in two rows of six. The materials, fit and finish of the Lanier stand are superior to those of the test tube rack. These are all subtle and minor differences, but positive ones in my mind. If you buy inexpensive pens, this might be an unnecessary luxury item — so be it. But, if you spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on "fine writing instruments", you might consider this an affordable and elegant desk accessory to keep your current rotation of pens nicely displayed and readily at hand. I like them both for what they are. To each their own.
