Hey Friends,
Very excited for the launch the next keyboard in our lineup. 65% keyboards have always been one of my favorite form factors. It allows me to take advantage of the smaller footprint on a compact keyboard and still give me to easily access the arrow cluster and navigation cluster which I use daily - from spreadsheets to video games.
The ALT High-Profile will ship with the same features that made the ALT awesome - the firmware will be based on QMK and we will be adding it to our keyboard configurator for easy reprogramming. The same RGB lighting and customization. The keyboard also has dual USB C connections that functions as an USB hub and the PCB will ship with Kaihua hotswap sockets to allow for easy switch swapping.
The thing that separates this beast apart is the high profile form factor. The switch tops and the bottom of the keycaps are now covered by the lip around the keyboard. To achieve this, we are machining the top out of a far large block of aluminum and the whole keyboard weighs almost 3 lbs. Some of the more intricate machining is resulting in machining time that is 20x what we've done on the original ALT.
This keyboard is another step in our eventual goal to make custom keyboard design more accessible to the community. We will continue to work on this line and add more offerings in the future - for example a matching numpad (you'll never let me forget!)
For community members, this simplifies the experience of owning a custom keyboard, for community designers, this solves the hardest parts of your technical back end. This solution for designers means more projects will make the leap from concept to production, increasing the diversity of designs available to the community at large.
Thanks for your interest and support, none of this would be possible without you and the continued support of the mech keys community at large.
YanboWufirst after all, thks for the black option and the good renders. Anyone from the problem with the ctrl render will appreciate. second, will be this case be sell separate from the keyboard? i already order a alt, but the hi-profile case looks good, but its the same board and buy again just bc the case seems a waste of materials. thks.
YanboWuI have to echo the various comments about spacing and blocker. I think there's enough time to make that final refinement so can you guys just get that done while we run the GB?
YanboWuDear YanboWu,
The supplied Kailh BOX Whites, are they the new- fixed stem version?
Please let me know soon as I intend on buying this keyboard for one of my minions but do not want them stuck with the problematic old BOX switch design, that massacred key caps.
Also letting everyone else know what you are supplying with this keyboard, would be very commendable.
Just read down further, hate having to spend time rolling downwards constantly, but hey thanks for answering my now very late question.
KaizMakThe OLD White Box switches (in fact nearly all of them in the Box range) destroyed GMK key-caps when placed upon them and used.
The Stem has been fixed (made smaller) so as to NOT destroy any more GMK key-caps or any others.
KaizMakCould well be because I do know that the SA profiled 'monsters' got stretched to a certain degree but never cracked unlike the GMK's.
Also the GMK's are the most expensive key-set when compared to other manufactured key-caps around the globe.
So many here had heart attack's and strokes when their beloved GMK's came away splintered and broken when removed off that tragic BOX gaper.
ElrickI'm literally never buying BOX switches again because there's no way to know 100% whether they're the old or new specs and my keycaps are way too expensive to risk it...
BlueCrownedIf YanboWu is telling everyone here these are NEW fixed stem Box Whites, then there is no need to not believe him.
Not in MassDrop's interest to screw with us here because it becomes common knowledge quite quickly every where, if they decided to go down that route.
Their business has to stand on comments and promises made during any Group Buy by their 'collaborators', otherwise it becomes another bent politician's campaign, to constantly lie and deceive.
We all know where that will lead?
ElrickThey already stated they won't replace any box switches for this issue, so if they are mistaken and ship the wrong box switches and my keycaps are ruined I'm screwed.
XyzacI really like the look of the keycaps they have on that prototype. I love the font, and it looks like they are seamless too. Do you happen to know what they are.. where one could find this set? - Thanks
YanboWuWill there be any more barebones or barebones with switches high profile? I just saw that this had dropped and apparently all sold out of the black and grey barebones. I'd love to get a black barebones if possible, or id settle with a grey if need be. Thanks!
YanboWuThanks for letting me know. I guess I shall just wait until next drop instead of wasting money on a color and switch I don't like just to get one.
oandakid718Yeah I'll buy yours from you. You're referring to the high profile one correct? There anything wrong with it? You just bought one but don't want it?
oandakid718Aw damn. I was driving all day yesterday taking my daughter home and couldn't check my phone immediately. Oh well, thanks anyways man. If you hear about anyone who wants to sell theirs, or even just the case gimme a heads up! Also to anyone interested I have a brand new in box never used Massdrop CNTRL keyboard with Halo True switches. Comes in the box with all papers, receipt, magnetic risers, keycap puller (and I literally just found out from a YouTube video that the provided keycap puller has a hidden screw driver in the handle if you unscrew it.haha blew my mind) and comes with the switch remover ad well as the USB-C cable. Everything that came with it. Shoot me a message if anyone is interested, Or if anyone just wants the switches I will sell them separately if need be.
KiefofpoliceFunny I must've watched the same video.. As soon after I grabbed it and had to see for myself hahah. Also, someone has two of them for sale of ebay….. starting price $500... Little ridiculous if I do say so myself.
YanboWuCan't get mine from to work on my Hackintosh (Intel NUC8i7BEH), working on my friend's PC though with a powered USB hub. Find it weird, my Hackintosh has a 3A USB 3.1, my friend uses a USB hub with 2A rating, i bought a 4A USB Hub and still can't get it to work.
YanboWuAny idea when the next production run and drop for the High-Profile model will be? I have the regular one and love it! I just want both for my collection and usage.
BlueCrownedSo test it out on the comma/period key. Nobody uses correct punctuation in sentences anymore so it won't be a big loss. Nah, I'm joking. I don't know if GMK sets come with any blank keycaps, but the last two sets of $75 keycaps I purchased came with 4 blank keys 2 in each color. Then 2 different colored brand logo keycaps (usually used for escape key). But in all honesty, I'm 99.9% sure they are (re-i forgot the term they used to signify they are fixed). Retooled maybe?
DoubleSteckHigh-profile ALT, low-profile ALT, high-profile CTRL, and low-profile CTRL are all in production right now. I don't have an exact date for you, but if you hit the request button, you will get notified when it is up for sale again.
jxliuBasically only after the High-profiled ALT and CTRL keyboards here.
Hoping some nice key-sets are also provided with them.
When are we going to get any 104 or 108 key keyboards? That alone is worth buying from you when you decide to release either an ALT or CTRL styled model - adding a key-pad right next to it.
Also having a Num key-pad in those styles that can be placed on either side of those keyboard's when joined together - firmly.
In fact try and copy what Asus did with their Claymore series and watch the orders come flooding in. Don't forget to make the keyboards all Hot-swap sockets for our own choice, in switches here.
KillThanks for the link here BUT it's a low profiled version.
What we want is the full HIGH profiled version which hasn't been released. Don't even know if they are even contemplating releasing it ever.
Until that happens we whom love the high profiled cases miss out on any future purchases. Thus far KBDfans, fills that void for now.
ElrickOH a high-profile is what you are interested in. Misinterpreted your message! That would be one beefy keyboard.. Production for the high-profiles should be the main concern as I am with you as in saying “only after the high-profile versions” As @jxliu said, the only high-profiles being produced are only the ALT and the CTRL, would be interesting to see a high profile in the Drop SHIFT keyboard.
KillYep, if it aint got extra-meat on it's casing, then it's not worth looking at.
Have always loved having more weight on ALL of my keyboards, still waiting for MD to pull their lazy finger out and give us what we all want.
Nice and heavy full sized honey, with all the pre-requisite's of hot-swap switches with a decent key-cap set supplied with it. Also hoping they supply various colours like Dark Midnight Blue, Bright Ferrari Red and maybe even some Lamborghini Yellow models.
Then MD would be the place that is leading with new full sized keyboards, done out in 'heavy' styling ; )
ElrickI have something cooking for the high-profile version man. Try to make it something really special so it is taking a bit longer before we have more details to share!
ElrickWe've mentioned already that the numpad is in the works. Pretty sure it will be standalone and not attachable to the CTRL/ALT.
We have the SHIFT in production, so not sure if there are any plans for a 104/108 keyboard at this point in time. I know compact 1800 is different from a true full-size, but it does check some of the same boxes.
YanboWuAs long as it displays the full BIGness of the keyboard and it stands solidly on any desk without fear or favour.
Remember the design is ALWAYS better when it resembles something from the 1970's here. That was the era of real keyboards built to last forever.
Everyone is making slim line, tiny keyboards now - nothing is unique but the BIG ones stand out loud and clear. They're the ones that attract attention and everyone wants to know what it actually is.
KillA couple corrections from Yanbo:
* Low-profile ALT new production (Drop-branded) is on its way to our warehouse. We had a production sample at our table at the Bay Area Mech Keys meetup today!
* High-profile ALT is in production (Drop-branded).
* Low-profile CTRL is in production (Drop-branded).
* High-profile CTRL is not in production yet (Drop-branded).
jxliuThank you @jxliu and thank you @YanboWu for the updates! Definitely pulling the trigger on the ALT High-Profile as soon as I see it on drop. Also, congratulations on the production sample at the Bay Area Mech Keys meetup! I wish I could’ve made it just to see that beauty!
YanboWuNow that the subsequent batch of HP ALT KBs are out. Any time frame on the matching numpad? Hopefully it can be shipped at the same time as my order :)
