Product Description
Our fourth collaboration with custom knife shop Ferrum Forge, the Buc (short for buccaneer) is the most daring yet—and now it comes in milled patterns for a touch of extra flair. It takes inspiration from traditional Asian cavalry sabres, which is in large part thanks to designer Elliot Williamson’s interest in historical edged weapons Read More

Ugly, inefficient knife. You've got to be a fool to spend this much money on this knife.

Nice collection of small fixed blades knives! I have quite a few fixed blade knives but the only neck knife I have is the DPx Gear HEAT Hiker...which has a scale-less handle with a built in carabiner. I’m also a knife hoarder who will probably never be able to part with any of my knives.

Lol i hear ya....but i'm slowly starting to change my brain when it comes to that. Definitely have a few i'd be willing to give up at this point (but many, many more that I really don't NEED, but won't get rid of 😅)

Hey everyone,
It’s been almost a year since we launched the Falcon, our first collaboration with Ferrum Forge, and about six months since we launched the Gent, our third collaboration and most recent new model. In between, we launched the Crux - all of these have been exciting, and well-received by the community...but, if you know the FFKW guys, you know they like to push the envelope when it comes to big knives with bold lines and aggressive blades. This fourth collaboration with Chris and Elliot of Ferrum Forge has been in the works for quite awhile, and we’re glad we can finally share it with the community.
Elliot’s design for this knife was inspired by Asian cavalry sabres. At the back, the Buc's prominent lanyard hole is derived from the ring at a sword's pommel which allowed horse-mounted soldiers to retain control of their weapons in battle by keeping them tied to their wrists with silk or cloth. The blade’s broad tip helps to generate momentum - originally, this was to build force when swinging a sword at enemies while riding. While we hope this is not your primary use for the Buc, it does make for a swift and satisfying deployment.
“Okay, so why is it called the Buc?” Fair question... we thought it looked like a pirate saber, so we came up with Buc, short for Buccaneer. We’re aware there is a long history of curved swords between the introduction of scimitars to Asia by Turkish cultures around 1100 to 1200 AD and their use much later in the Carribean seas by swashbuckling pirates during the 18th and 19th centuries. This evolution may not exactly be linear, and we welcome an exploration of the history and evolution of edged weapons in the discussion.
My point here is: we think this chopper looks awesome, it’s got great flipping action, and it’s just as useful as it is cool. New and noteworthy for this latest Massdrop x FFKW design are 1) contrasting colors on the clip and backspacer, and 2) opening near the spine to allow for opening with a finger flick.
A few housekeeping notes on this drop:
* The special price of $114.99 will only be offered on this first pre-production drop. The regular price will be $124.99. * Serial numbers will be preceded by a color code: G for Gray, L for Blue, Z for Bronze. * This first drop is limited to 1500 total units, but there is not a limit per color. * We’re allowing four months for production and shipping after the drop ends, so our estimated ship date is August 31st, 2018.
Thanks for checking it out, and for making this possible!

I agree 100% the only other thing I'd add is after the original buyer's all have there knives and if you can't find one up for grabs through here Check The Exchange on BladeForums that's a great spot to pick up all kinds of knives at a fair price. I often see the other Massdrop Colaberasion knives up for sale on there. Good luck Lastcrowonthewire.👍😎

They always ship existing orders before they reopen the drop for people who want to get in on it after the fact.
You've got about a week, maybe two.
This was a fun knife to design! I am something of a student of edge tools through history, part of the impetus for starting to make knives came from archaeometallurgical research when I was in college. I like going back to the historical record for inspiration when designing knives because edge tools were predominantly purpose-driven and some of the design aspects of antiquity actually do carry over and offer benefit in the modern folding knife. The curvatures exhibited in slashing swords and sabers actually facilitate nice pull cut geometries when shrunken down to pocket knife size. Tips that, while broad for increasing swing momentum, still have a pronounced point work in knife size for our modern day package opening uses. And the broad tip with it's center of mass well forward of the pivot area, does make for a snappy flipper.
The other thing I really like about this design is that regardless of my design intention and what I thinking when I designed the lines of this knife, people see different things. While I was thinking Asianic ring sabers, some see a cutlass, some see scimitar, and still others see a cleaver. In my opinion, once functionality and utility are there, design aesthetic is at it's best when the knife evokes different interpretations that are varied from person to person.

Historically they always reopen the drop once they get the existing orders shipped, and then sell whatever number they ordered on top of the preordered ones.
They've been getting more blingy lately, I wouldn't be surprised if this time around the redrop includes Bucs with milling like the Wing, Juggernaut, and Saber, and I also wouldn't be surprised if they have a good number of extra Bucs on hand.

Have you ever owned a ZT 0450? How would you compare the Crux vs the ZT or rather which do you prefer?
Obviously the Crux isn't available at the moment but trying to decide between Buc vs Crux vs ZT 0450.

BrumledbSho nuff. The Crux and 0450 are both very similar in overall size, but that is where the similarities end. The Crux is much thicker, in grip, slab thickness, and blade thickness. The 0450 has a bit of learning curve to find the sweet spot for opening. Though I've heard people complain about the same thing with the Crux. It's really not a bad thing, it just is what it is. Once you find your perfect grip, then it'll never again be an issue.
I would consider the ZT to be a bit more refined. One of my favorite "Gent" knives". And if you ever need warranty or parts in the future, hands down ZT kicks butt in a big way. With Massdrop, anything other than a major flaw or catastrophic failure, in the hands of ONLY the original purchaser, then you are SOL. Individual parts are not even an option. But on the plus side with Massdrop, they have been known to do an occasional hot swap. If all the warranty boxes are checked and you meet them all, they may send out a new item (if available), and you can return the warranty item when received.
But will say that I do like both for very different reasons. I have enough knives now that I find myself less often comparing knives of different brands against each other. And now simply comparing any specific knife against its advertised strengths, my specific needs, and/or wants.......And whether or not it meets those qualities.
In some cases I could grab a half dozen knives meant to compete with (or beat out) each other, and I end up liking them all for completely different reasons. One excels at x, while the next at y. Therefore I can never part with any, yet seldom use them either. Yup, I'm broken. 🤕😂

I couldn't believe it when ferrum forge emailed me with "we do not offer parts for any massdrop collaboration knife" I emailed again asking the specs of the screws , thread pitch, guage, and length used so I could find someone to sell them to me. I haven't received a response back.

Just got my mothership blue and love it. The blue is a matte finish and feels great. Blade is perfectly centered and the action is one of the smoothest in any knife I've used. This is another home run from ferrum forge and we knives.

For the person who said there buc has a serial number, I don't think it's a serial number it should be the type of metal it is. Metals are categorized by numbers like that.

Cleaver style blade with multiple opening options and offered in a choice of colors, designed by my dudes at FF in San Diego... YES! This is the drop I've been waiting for and I didn't even know it.
What color did everyone go with? This is the hardest choice, really.

I didn't see, though I gave up reading a lot of the BS going on there and started just skimming. But I've never seen a patina that couldn't be removed myself, it's not like it's deep pitted rust
He did say though that in the end he still liked the knife and was happy with it, rather than taking the offered refund/exchange
Many people seem much more offended by this whole situation than the OP does lol

If he didn't try he's a moron. Also, keeping a blade lightly oiled prevents much drama.

So, this popping up again got me to pull out my Buc last night....originally planning to just take it apart and try to stiffen up the detent, but on a whim I decided to just anodize it while I had it apart LOL
Started out the original dark grey with blue backspacer and clip I left the dark finish and just anodized right over that to see what would happen
search
Super hard to capture in pictures, but at 12v it darkened the grey even further and gave it a deep purple undertone when the light hits it right
Then I scuffed the corners with a rust eraser sponge and dipped again at 9v for a deep bronze at the 'wear areas'
search
For the clip and backspacer I left the blue as is, but did the same rust eraser edging followed by an 11v bath for a slightly brighter bronze
search
Detent could still be a little stronger holding the blade shut IMO......but I love the looks of it MUCH more now
In person the colors are so much better than I could get them on screen, nice and subtle around the wear areas and very natural looking

I wrote to We Knife Co (who made the Buc) and they said they usually sharpen their blades to angles of between 25 and 30 degrees (each side of course). I know Zero Tolerance blades are sharpened to angles of between 20 and 22 degrees. I guess it depends on how slicey you want it.
