Product Description
Handy and portable, the Nextool Flagship multi-tool comes with an array of tools to help you get through most daily tasks. Made from stainless steel, it measures just over 4 inches long, so you can take it pretty much anywhere you need it Read More
There's additional issues with Chinese steels that I had to deal with when I was still working (now a retired Engineer, that's why I have time to lurk in these discussions). Essentially, unless I have no choice, I'll not buy anything made in China unless I know the degree of oversight from the American (or some Japanese) companies involved (ie, I have a Chinese made iPhone - no choice). Particularly anything that my family or my pets would breathe, ingest, apply topically (including clothing), etc.
I wish DROP would make it a point to always include manufacturing location for EVERYTHING.
I agree with your assessment of this steel. I am sure that it is a cut above 3Cr13. I don't understand the reason that Kershaw even bothers with this grade.
Seems to me there are a lot of wankers complaining more about the knife blade on thirty-dollar, fifteen function multi-tool, than they would about the blade on a $30 pocket knife.
SPOILER ALERT: no tool in a multi-tool device is intended to absolutely, positively replace a single, dedicated-purpose tool--particularly in a multi-tool that only costs thirty-bucks!
I encourage everyone who thinks their very lives may depend on the function of every tool in their multi-tool device, to cough up a few extra bucks and buy something more commensurate with their high and mighty standards:
It's the cutest, and the price is shockingly reasonable--assuming the quality is as good as it appears to be in the photos.
I have other multi-tools but I often forget all the cool attachment/functions they have on them. I sometimes find myself saying: "damn, I should have used the XYZ attachment/function for that job!"
I need to work on that. Meantime, I'm get'n one of these ;- )
PafkataSo you paid $300 for your Leatherman Wave? Even the Ti version of the Wave doesn't cost near that much here in the States. Where are you that you would pay that much for a Wave? And why not just order from a U.S. seller, pay the extra shipping, and still come out way ahead of $300?
Just got mine, here are my thoughts:
This thing is huge! Somehow I thought it would be Wingman/Sidekick sized, but it's actually slightly heavier than a Leatherman Wave.
The scissors seem overkill for a pocket tool. They might be useful if you commonly cut card stock, canvas or other thick fabric occasionally. I tried removing the scissors to see how much weight it would save. On my kitchen scale the scissors on their on weigh 1.3 oz, and the rest of the knife weighs 7.4 oz. If you try this at home, keep in mind that reattaching the scissors is quite difficult.
The folding/unfolding action for each of the tools feels very snappy and positive, and not cheap at all. There is a small amount of play in the pliers' central hinge, more than on my wingman. There was also a bit of lubricant leaking from the pivot point when I received it. Hopefully this isn't a continual problem.
The knife blade is pretty beefy, but rather dull out of the box. The lock up on the saw and knife are solid, with no play. I don't know why the saw doesn't have a one-hand-open thumb hole.
The wire cutting blades seem to be replaceable, but after talking to Nextorch customer service there seems to be no way to buy replacements...
This is a nice tool overall. Unlike the cheap feeling knockoff multi-tools you find at this price or lower, this one has a premium feel about it, with a level of fit and finish that leaves nothing to complain about.
I see, you wan't to know if you can use a multi-tool with scissors to make paper dolls and snowflakes?

Well I suppose that depends talented you are. Whenever I try to make paper snowflakes I seem to end up with more confetti than flakes, but you? Who can say?
However it's always been my experience that any too in a multi-tool configuration is going to involve more shortcomings/sacrifices, and be a little less convenient to use than the same tool in stand alone form--most folks accept that as a given. The concept behind a multi-tool is that you're willing to accept that trade off vs carrying around a pocket full of the alternatives.
So, probably not the best tool for making snowflakes and dolls, but if you don't happen to have a nice pair of pointy Fiskars with you at the time, these will just have to do!
elindredI tried to explain the size differences early on--guess I didn't catch you?

As to the scissors, they are beefy so you can cut through tough stuff, like annoying plastic blister packaging--before it cuts you.
You may find them "overkill" for certain other uses, but it would be unfair to expect them to replace every standalone tool in one's pencil box

Regarding replacement blades for the wire jaws--as I explained above, they are $30/pair, and these are them!
I bought this in June 2019. I fiddled with it a bit, and left it on my desk.
A few days ago, having barely used it previously, I tried to use the scissors and discovered that the mechanism broke. I contacted Drop support and was told that the 30 day return period expired. I asked for the manufacturer’s contact information for a warranty replacement, and here is the response I got from Drop:
”Unfortunately we are not able to give out manufacturer contact information due to prior contracts and agreements. At Drop, we purchase our inventory through authorized dealers. As we then pass along this inventory to our members, we are a third party retailer. As the tool was not purchased directly from the manufacturer, any warranty provided may not be honored, as the purchase was made via a third party. As we are the direct buyer, the warranty is not transferable to the member unless otherwise stated on the run page. “
I would never have purchased this if I’d known it didn’t come with the manufacturer’s warranty. As you might imagine, I am very disappointed with this response. If Drop doesn’t change their mind quickly I’ll be filing a consumer fraud complaint with my state Attorney General, and I’ll also be reaching out to my credit card company for a chargeback.
Drop offered a 30 day, Nextorch/Nextool's warranty is for 15 days for a replacement and 5 years for repair. I do the purchasing for EDC and know where they came from, here is the link explaining the warranty and the link to submit a warranty claim with Nextool: http://www.nextorch.com/en/index.php/faq , http://www.nextorch.com/en/index.php/aftersales . Drop does run some products purchased from a 3rd party and the CS agent was just mistaken on this product.
Just a heads-up. As I'm writing this, you can buy this exact item on Aliexpress (on Nextool official Aliexpress store) for $28 and shipping now, not in one month. It's currently on sale for 15%, the regular price seems to be $33.
In the interest of settling once and for all the debate on whether one should by this multitool for thirty bucks or a Leatherman for sixty-bucks, I would point potential buyers to this official Leatherman video where they demonstrate the Sidekick's mike-dropping superiority at zucchini slicing! Don't try that with an inexpensive copy-cat device like the Nextool Flagship 16-in-1 Pro Multi-tool!
