Product Description
Named The Absolute Sound’s 2016 Editors’ Choice and “one of the products that should be on anyone short list,” the NuForce DAC80 is built to extract every bit of nuance and detail from your digital music collection. It has the sleek, minimalist design of its predecessor, the original DAC100, with an improved noise floor that provides a silent background for your tunes to shine against Read More
What a great DAC at this price! I can understand the thread disappointment in the remote. I looked at it when unboxing and never even bothered using it. Volume knob is flimsy and no real low level listening is possible as cuff off is too high in my system.
But what a strong performer in terms of sound quality the DAC80 is! Resolution, soundstage, imaging, timing and speed. I have tried other DACs most much more expensive (factor 2-6 range) and since I really covet the SQ traits the DAC80 has to offer, I have found myself unimpressed with these other DACs. On the negative side the sound is quite sterile and dry but not in a good way - dry as in stop short, chalky ... bah >words<.
QUESTION: (since the manual is no longer available at Optoma).
Does this unit bypass the preamp section when the volume is set to max (so that I can use another preamp with the DAC alone?)
Right now I am using it with a SS poweramp. But I am getting a dedicated preamp because of audiophile sadness with the preamp section in this unit. I wan´t to use the DAC80 for a while after though.
I absolutely love my Dac80! Maybe for the price there is nothing better.
But since I have got other Dacs and will also buy something which is clearly better soon, this gem has to go. I will sell it if somebody is interested. The unit is black.
I just recently got my dac80 ( after a looong way through the customs etc). I'm quite surprised it has so many negative opinions here. I don't have any technical problems with my unit. The remote - well, I'm not going to use it. But the sound.... 270$ (including shipping ) it's something I would call a real bargain for that sound quality! I'm really happy with sound, and actually I'm positively impressed! I'm using coaxial input if that matters.
Nothing bad I can say about this DAC. I really recommend it. Now I greatly enjoy my all albums anew, and my new set dac80+Lehmann Linear+good scotch single malt - it's a beautiful match!
Cheers!
I have had my DAC 80 for about 8 months now. I use it in a classic, high end, speaker based system in a properly designed room. ( see original post well down this list).
I noticed this is back for another drop at an even cheaper price and am letting some other hifi friends know about this.
Reading through the comments below, it appears that many are unhappy with the remote (fully agree - it is junk), and unhappy with the power down (never noticed as I don't bother powering down). Not many recent comments on the sound though so I thought I should pipe in again.
This is a really good sounding DAC. Read this whole thread and you'll see that most (not all) informed posters agreed that the DAC 80 sounds really good.
For the 250.00 asking price, if you are most concerned with having good sound, this is worth considering.
Does anymobody know how well this would go to gether with an Emotiva BasX A-100 amp (used with jumpers for headphones)?
I can't find any detail about the amp's output impedance, given that the NuForce DAC's is a bit higher than normal.

AndyZillaI can't speak from experience about the pairing, I'm a multibit fan, but I don't think the less efficient 100 ohms output will trouble the Emotiva driving headphones even without the jumpers installed. However, it could be a concern if your trying to drive 8 ohm inefficient speakers, something you may ask on the Emotiva forum about.
Do not buy this...
I just got mine today and already disappointed.
First powering off mentioned in several other comments are totally true. I can't get the unit to power off using the buggy remote and trying to power off the unit by holding down the nob will power it down but as soon as I let go it will turn back on, so the only way to actually turn it off is with the switch on the back. This doesn't bother me too much since I wasn't planing on turning it off all that often.
There is a clicking noise when you mute or change to a different source.
There is no way to determine the volume level if you use the remote.
And most importantly, I bought it to connect it to my tv and use it with my LSR305s because it had a REMOTE and is a preamp.
Do not expect the remote to work properly. The remote only picks up in very small angles and positions I mean it will work the first time and not work on the next click and also the buttons are very buggy.
When I turn up the volume and want to lower it because i dont have any kind of indication of the signal registering or the volume level, holding down the volume down button will actually continue to raise it for some reason. At first the mute button was registering twice so basically the mute button wasn't functional.
The sound quality seems to be great and does what it's supposed to (using optical not sure about usb).
I would not recommend buying this if you're planning on using the remote.
ShadyMercenary@Sammyboy0203 Believes that it comes with a USB cable, though it's not listed as being included in the description, so maybe or maybe not to that. The dac does appear to have a coaxial output, so either a coax cable or RCA cables, depending on your amp.
Does anyone know?
Buying two items with massdrop.
By choosing to ship abroad.
Can it be sent in one package?
With the only shipping costs?
I want to buy Dekoni Premium Ear Pads for HD 58X & HD 6XX
Today I received this device. There is a problem. The off option does not work. This applies to the remote control and dac itself. The only option to turn off the device is to cut off the current using the switch on the back. Does anyone of you have a similar problem?
Never thought of that, I was just plan to not buy anything made by NuForce again. I left that DAC at work (which I don't use often) and using a different DAC at home now. May be I should contact MassDrop and see what they can do, but I throw away all the boxes and packaging of that thing already...
Sammyboy0203just an fyi, for the M8 i purchased from massdrop, massdrop would only cover 3 months for warranty. anything that happen after 3 months, you are on your own. but the manufacturer would likely entertain
