I've been in heavy downpours for over an hour, and I've never had an issue with it leaking.
The only complaint I would have given it is that it is rather expensive. This Massdrop sort of fixed that part. :)
Regarding how hot it is in the sun:
Well, it's definitely not as cool as something like a woven sun hat, but I've gone backpacking with it in the 90s and have been comfortable. I don't think I'd take it to a low desert, though. But you probably wouldn't have to worry about rain as much in the low desert, either.

I've owned my Seattle Sombrero nearly 20 years now. It's been packed, smashed, flattened, and otherwise treated pretty poorly. I've been all over the world from the drizzle of the UK to the monsoons of India. The hat has been warm at times, but I've never had it leak. When the forecast calls for rain, this is grabbed. Much prefer over a hood as it keeps my ears clear and is generally quieter. Not exactly light, but when it is just pissing rain and you want to stay dry, this does it. I wish I could find a jacket that would hold up as well as this does. I recall at least 4 jackets while I've had the hat and there is likely one or two more.
If I had to find a fault, it might be the drips I get right in front as the brim flows some of the rain off that way. This isn't a real serious issue and the brim is wide enough to keep them from falling on anything, but it can get annoying if you are trying to do something and have these drips fall on your work - especially if you are writing. (^_^)
ElhanThanks to Jake_Number9, I sent a jacket back to OR. They offered to replace it or give me a credit. I didn't like the only color option remaining, so I got a credit with OR.
So, while I was a little disappointed with the quality, the service was fantastic and very fast, and OR honored its warranty.
Thanks, again, Jake!
ShawnRufusA bug net is like a few dollars, they come in shapes that fit around your hat, and you can take them off and pack them down super small for those times you don't need them. Like say, in a downpour where you won't be having a mozzie problem, but you WOULD be having a "I have a useless net which I can't take off, that is now soaked and heavy"-problem.
SlugnuttyThose were on-sale--close out colors/end of season etc, etc..but not the regular price you'd generally find for the regular colors available in all sizes. More power to you if you can pick one up on sale, but that's not a legit barometer for price comparisons
Never owned any OR products. Currently sporting a Tilley but have wanted to try this brand for a while. Thanks MD for working out a price for us to try new merchandise. I'm trying out the Ghost Rain hat. Should work out well with my upcoming fall adventures. Tks
It does breathe better than my cotton Tilley, and is lighter as wel. I made a booboo and cut the adjustable band out of my ghost because I have a huge head, but that made it too big ☹️
I own one too and I like to point out that very rumpled crown you see in the main set of photos is exactly what you get. You do not get that well-shaped, rather stylish looking crown that you see in the shots showing the color options. If you are familiar with a "crumpler" hat, you know what you're getting--these things have no shape and keep no shape. That said, it works great for rain protection!
I've had an OR waterproof hat for ~15 years. This is definitely a Buy It For Life purchase.

Why have a brim that secures to the crown with velcro and leaves your ears uncovered?
If it's sunny you don't want your ears uncovered. If it's wet you don't your ears uncovered. If it's neither sunny nor wet then you don't need to have the hat on...
It is a feature that is useful for different activities. For instance, I am an archer, and when I am shooting my bow I need to have the Brim secured up and away on my strong side so that the hat does not interfere with my anchor point, sighting and release process. I know some fly fisherman that do not want their periphery compromised on their vision as they are casting. They secure the brim on their casting side so that they have full range of view. I am sure there are hundreds of more examples for the use of this feature. If you are one that just plods along and you do not need to secure the brim out of your way for your activity, then forget the hat has that feature.
