I've been wanting to try a fountain pen for some time, and not just a few scribbles here or there, but use one for a significant period of time. But, I wasn't feeling committed to a Mont-Blanc. This is a perfect price point to enter at and see if a better built pen is worthwhile.
That said, does anyone know how the cartridges hold up? What's their approximate lifespan, both on the shelf and when used moderately every day? Thanks!

HplogSince your beginning to just get into fountain pens id recommend a Lamy Safari or Al-Star. They're solidly built pens from Germany and are great for beginners. Ive been writing for years and I love all my Safaris. I used them in college and now use them at the construction site while jotting down notes. Its also the first fountain pen I got.
Heres a pretty good review of Regal Fountain Pens: http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/150041-regal-pens/
Can someone please explain why people buy these, like are they more cost effective, is it just fun, do they write better than normal pens. Because, I can not see the point of purchasing a (for example) buying a 50 dollar pen.

IntriguedConsumer44Writing with a fountain pen is, for me, a pleasurable tactile experience. I'm a writer for a living and therefore must take a lot of notes, and doing so with my pilot custom 74 or Levenger true writer select or colibri equinox is a hell of a lot more fun than with a Bic. Add to that all the myriad colors of inks you can use, the friendly subculture, the wow factor when you pull out a new pen at the office, and I can't think of a better (though admittedly expensive) hobby.

writerstephenDitto everything you have said. Line variation, colors, etc ... all make it a more pleasurable experience.

Does anyone have one of these pens for comparison. I mean for the price I could get two pilot metros. How do they compare?

I just joined this drop, these pens are just plain beautiful. Just wondering what size nib they are? Might be a #6, would be great for swapping. Does anyone have this info?

MxwldmOne thing you should know, though, as far as swapping: you can't. At least I don't think you can. I tried to remove the nib/feed from the section (because I'd already ordered a new section/nib/feed assembly having dropped my pen and bent the nib). Nothing doing. I actually ended up damaging the feed in the process.

Liz, it's a week since your last message that the items were in MD warehouse and would be sent out soon. Any definite date for the delivery?

Sorry, I have a n00bie question.... which end of the cartridge gets punctured, and what keeps it from falling off of its position? There appears to be nothing inside the pen body to hold it in place. Am I missing something?

whamprodHey @whamprod -- It will be very obvious when you see these in person, but: the smaller side fits on to the feed inside the barrel, which is how ink flows to the nib through the grip section.
The cartridge should fit snugly when you push it down firmly, and is held there with friction. I hope that helps to get you started, but you're welcome to come back and ask for more help if you need it. I'm really happy that Massdrop is a place where people try new things, and I think you will find that experts in our community are quite happy to share their passion with newcomers.

From what I can tell via Google--- Chinese made pen. Similar in quality to hero/jinhao. Never heard of them previously myself but the internet seems somewhat fond of them. Common note from reviews seems to be that you get what you pay for and the cap is rather heavy. While they look nice and I'd usually be down to try'm, I like my pens thicker than that.
