I didn't even read the page, and just immediately bought these after seeing the email. Trees are the best and I love that these have Conifers on them. After getting a house a couple years ago, I had to redo our landscaping and ended up coming across the world of dwarf conifers. I now have a collection of 100+ rare ones, joined The American Conifer Society, and am getting deeply involved. Now my keebs will be able to represent that.
For those of you interested in this and trees, I highly recommend checking out the ACS. They do great work, have fun events, and you get access to discounts and private member-only sales from the finest specialty wholesale nurseries in the country. We also have a quarterly magazine just called Conifer. Membership is only $40 and you can easily make that back through the nursery discount program if you're doing any landscaping/gardening.
www.conifersociety.orgAlso, I want to strongly recommend dwarf conifers to those of you on this discussion thread (because you like collectible things[keebs] and trees). Dwarf conifers often have crazy characteristics (striking colors, weird forms, other oddities), are easy to maintain, and can fit in any garden (For example, I have two extremely rare 8-10 yr Western Redcedars varieties that are each 5" tall after growing freely these years, the normal species can be 300ft, and after 10 years it should be maybe 20ft tall.)
So yeah, this comment is weird. But conifers are a great hobby and can work in any garden (or even apt balcony). I'd be happy to help point people in the right direction if you're interested. And hell, I'll even send you a rare dwarf conifer as a gift for free if you join the ACS and tell me.
Edit:
Lets get some trees planted, everyone! 🤲🌳🍃
If you are interested in seeing what the keycaps would look like with a particular keycap set, please post your request below and I will get it done.
For now, here's the trees in a generic 9009 color way - hope you enjoy it!
Hey Everyone!
Inspired by the competitive & fun rivalry between the likes of Tobi Lutke, Elon Musk, Jack Dorsey, Susan Wojcicki- we wanted to see what the Mech Keys community could do to help the #TeamTrees effort.
If you're not familiar with #TeamTrees, it's a fundraiser started by the YouTube community (MrBeast) with the hopes to raise $20 Million dollars to plant 20-million trees. Very quickly, lots of other internet-celebrities and communities got together to pitch into the effort. People tweeted to Elon Musk and he agreed to a $1 Million dollar donation!
So two weeks ago, we asked MiTo if he could help this effort by designing a charity keycap. We convinced the Drop CEO to agree to running this at a 100% loss, where all proceeds (every dollar collected from you!) will go to TeamTrees. And then we frantically rushed samples back and forth to get ourselves a final product.
Now the project is live and we hope you consider picking up a Treecap (or two!) and support our donation.
Update 1: Over $10k raised in the first 90 minutes! You guys are amazing. Update 2: Over $20k raised at the 8.5 hour mark! WE'RE GONNA MAKE THE LEADERBOARD! Update 3: Over $30k raised at the 24-hour mark! Update 4: Over $40k raised at the 5-day mark! 20th on the leaderboard (teamtrees.org) Update 5: We're at $50,060 with 40 minutes left to go!!! Update 6: Final Tally: $50,170
Just to let everybody know,
You would need to plant 20 million tries TWICE a day every day in order to offset just US co2 emissions and the US isn't even the largest producer of co2.
Trees are nice but are also extremely inefficient, if you want to make a change advocate against the negative stigma of nuclear energy.
China for almost the past decade has planted over a Billion trees a year. They’re turning deserts into forests and managing to do it in such a way that has our scientists scratching their head and asking “how?”.
dothedogAh yes, not understanding how little carbon footprint producing and shipping a few grams of plastic has, compared to how much CO2 5 trees will remove. Wonderful.
Does anyone see the irony in mass-producing plastic to help the environment? This isn’t a particularly nice or exotic keycap, so most people will probably throw it in their drawer or the trash.
I mean, anyone who goes to teamtrees.org and donates from seeing this drop has made it worth anyway. Awareness has no price, but is valuable. Even if 0 people buy into this drop, it will have made an impact by using keyboards and drop as a vector for awareness.
I think you could be right but perhaps we could agree that it might muddy the waters a bit. Plus even if this were a a net negative purchase (in terms of environmental impact), it could very well help motivate people to do more and engage on this issues in additional ways. In that regard, I may be underestimating the positive effect this product may ultimately have.
Even if no one buys the cap, the exposure to the cause is worth it imo. Anyone can head over to https://teamtrees.org/ and make a direct donation.
But if you're gonna buy neat little novelty pieces of plastic anyway, then why not get some tree's out of the deal.
I don't see it as any different than people who have bumper stickers or pins that say they contributed to various eco campaigns as it's mostly to raise awareness and have something to show your support. You can argue about the altruistic value of "bragging" on the latter point, but I would rather someone swagger about planting trees than a lot of other things.
