Looking for a Dac/Amp for use with my laptop running windows 8. I like a compact option and I travel a lot, but the dac/amp will only be used on a desk setup, never on a phone, and I never use the laptop while out and about, so power is never an issue. Basically, a desktop dac/amp that is transportable. Will this work or are there any better options out there? Budget is maybe $200 USD or less.

This is a good option. Another is to save some money and get the Schiit Audio Fulla 2 from Schiit.com for $100. I use it and like it a lot for its size, price point and sound.

PinkdanYes, I use it that way weekly. There is one input for audio/charging and one for just charging. My Galaxy S8+ can be used with it for several hours before I need to think about 1) charging the phone or 2) hooking the Schiit Fulla 2 to a portable battery.
Is it "messy? " Sure. You'll have your phone and the cable going to the SF2, plus your headphone cable - so two cables. Then, if you're going to be charging it while you're listening, you'll have three cables: your phone, the SF2 and a battery. I've only need that when 1) my phone wasn't fully charged at the start of my flight or 2) it's more than a 4-hour flight.

tryzubWow! I have a Schiit Magni so this sounds like a great idea. it‘ll be a little weird for me cause I have an iPhone so I’d have that lightning camera adapter too for digital, but I’ve have that for any portable amp. Can the Fulla drive 250ohm Beyerdynamics? Or HD 6XX’s? How about 600ohm cans?

PinkdanThe SF2 can drive my 250 Ohm cans to a volume I don't want to exceed with my Galaxy. The Galaxy can drive them, too, but not to a volume that would drown out the airplane engines. :)
