I am running Volumio using an Allo Piano DAC (with integrated headphone amp) on my RPi Model 3 B+. I've added a 128 GB flash drive and it's a great little system for me. I'm sure this BOSS DAC sounds even better.

For those of you asking what formats, bit-depths, sample rates, etc. this supports, note that the Allo BOSS DAC is based on the Texas Instruments PCM5122 DAC chip. The datasheet tells all: http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/pcm5122.pdf The datasheet makes no mention at all of DSD. I don't think native DSD decoding is available from this DAC.
Regarding the BOSS DAC: This is a great sounding DAC HAT, regardless of the cost. What you save in $$ you may wind up spending in configuration and troubleshooting time. But it's worth it. A player based on a Raspberry Pi 3B+ equipped with this DAC can make a really, really good sounding digital player for little money.
I have an older version of this DAC in a Raspberry Pi 3 (no B). It sounds really good. I've had it over a year and I like it a whole lot.
I also have one of this new version 1.2 BOSS DAC, but it doesn't play nice with the onboard WiFi adapter in my older RPi3. I can tell you the new V1.2 BOSS sounds just noticeably better than the older version. Not night-and-day, but noticeable nonetheless.
Highly recommended if you have more time and patience than money.

Can this do dsd tracks or mqa? I use a raspbery pi to stream dsd from my server, and mqa when a friend comes over... lol I don't have tidal. A version of this that would have DSD capabilities and MQA would make my world. Seems like this one just does PCM...?

I'm not sure either haha, I'll consider the shipping price, good to know they ship to the US.
Well actually, I know I'm looking for something that isolates itself from the raspberry pi, something that plays DSD (64 and 128 [and maybe MQA if possible]), and something that maybe I can upgrade the power supply for later when I can afford a linear power supply.

Run it with Moode Audio 4.x and you're set. Add in Raspotify if you need to feed Spotify.

Oh--so this is what a DAC looks like in its birthday suit--shocking!

I built a respectable headphone amplifier/Music player using a down rev Boss on top of a Pi 3 B with an Objective 2 Amp and am quite happy with it. I'm arguing with my self about duplicating it for a gift. For a budget minded person with an eye to quality I don't think you can go too wrong with a setup like this. It all comfortably fits is a small 6 inch cube that I built out of oak and voila 1 Music Cube. I added a 500 Gb ssd drive and have over 15,000 Flac audio files on it so whether I want o listen to internet radio or my own library I'm good to go. I have 2 choices for Software and both have different advantages; Volumio is gorgeous software but by it's very nature somewhat restrictive. My day to day choice for versatility is to use Raspbian with a VNC connection to my phone or another computer. The only downside is the number of power supplies needed.

I would love to see formats supported and bitrates , as its posted it mentions a bitrate but on what format. ....s my main interest is in PCM. what does it go up to? example 24/196, another Sabre32 DA chip ES9028 which can support up to 32Bit/384KHz input , PCM .
and do these player you mention for the pi support LOSSLESS files or only LOSSY?

Stone_MaNBoth. I can recommend Volumio as a standalone distro/player

Stone_MaNI'd like to know if it can do dsd mqa etc? If it could I'm so in! I have raspberry pi 3 already for this purpose. Having a matching dac would be killer. I'm using other dacs atm.

This will be my second Boss, fourth DAC / Pi combo. I've auditioned this next to a Hifi Berry Dac Plus Zero and a stock Pi using USB to a Modi Uber. The Boss is darker than the Hifi Berry but not veiled. Clarity below 500Hz is supremely better. The comparison using the Pi as USB transport to the Schiit is difficult to notice the difference, both are very good. I've done Roon, Max2Play, and Volumio. Spotify Connect is just stupid easy with Volumio and the interface looks like a designer was actually involved. I don't leverage an existing music library (have one but the newest thing is 8 years old) so it doesn't make sense to give them my money. I'll be putting Volumio on this one as well as a gift to my dad. My only want here is the case. The acrylic case (even the dark one) lets far too much light pass through and the LEDs still shine through. @Massdrop strike a deal on the aluminum boss player case.

Why the BOSS and not the Katana?
