The Drop ALT High-Profile is just like the original ALT, but now it comes with a tall CNC-aluminum case that covers the switches. Machined to have a 6-degree angle, the case is ergonomically crafted for a natural feel Read More
Hey Friends,
Very excited for the launch the next keyboard in our lineup. 65% keyboards have always been one of my favorite form factors. It allows me to take advantage of the smaller footprint on a compact keyboard and still give me to easily access the arrow cluster and navigation cluster which I use daily - from spreadsheets to video games.
The ALT High-Profile will ship with the same features that made the ALT awesome - the firmware will be based on QMK and we will be adding it to our keyboard configurator for easy reprogramming. The same RGB lighting and customization. The keyboard also has dual USB C connections that functions as an USB hub and the PCB will ship with Kaihua hotswap sockets to allow for easy switch swapping.
The thing that separates this beast apart is the high profile form factor. The switch tops and the bottom of the keycaps are now covered by the lip around the keyboard. To achieve this, we are machining the top out of a far large block of aluminum and the whole keyboard weighs almost 3 lbs. Some of the more intricate machining is resulting in machining time that is 20x what we've done on the original ALT.
This keyboard is another step in our eventual goal to make custom keyboard design more accessible to the community. We will continue to work on this line and add more offerings in the future - for example a matching numpad (you'll never let me forget!)
For community members, this simplifies the experience of owning a custom keyboard, for community designers, this solves the hardest parts of your technical back end. This solution for designers means more projects will make the leap from concept to production, increasing the diversity of designs available to the community at large.
Thanks for your interest and support, none of this would be possible without you and the continued support of the mech keys community at large.
YanboWuNow that the subsequent batch of HP ALT KBs are out. Any time frame on the matching numpad? Hopefully it can be shipped at the same time as my order :)
Why am i forced to buy switches i will never use? Previous sales had an option for barebones... i have enough keyboards to where dont need this, but want to try it. Making it mandatory to use switches i dont like makes me pass on this.
Hey everyone,
Quick note that we sold a limited quantity of extra inventory we had at our warehouse. This wasn't the additional production run we are currently running on this keyboard. We expect that batch to arrive early next year.
Apologies for playing with everyone's feelings like this!
Please bring this keyboard back on sale! So many people, including myself, would buy the instant it came back. If anything, at least reply to a discussion post about an ETA for a restock if it is in fact coming back in the future, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Thank you Yanbo for the Pics.
YES the heaviness of this keyboard is quite sublime. ALWAYS make keyboards that have a lot of Meat on them.
The Key-caps would love it - being surrounded by some chunky goodness ; )
So after receiving that COLD middle finger salute from MassDrop yesterday, that broke my heart : (
After explaining to them they better not start behaving like Bent Politicians and we get that very same response.
Got "Trumped" by them and now we get all sort of responses from everyone else here but NOTHING from MD.
Have to pull out, feel so thoroughly used and lied to by them. How could you ever trust them again when they can not even run a simple Group Buy?
Is this how MassDrop runs it's business now, with no reliance upon truth or decency and then hope that the customers will TRUST them again?
My second youngest is extremely depressed because his father promised him a unique keyboard. Do you know how difficult it is to look into his eyes and tell him, that his happiness has been crushed FOREVER by this callous and cruel company, known as MassDrop.
Elrick"Son, I'm sorry but in the real world, sometimes things don't work out and we don't get some of the things we want. That's just the way life is, for us and for everyone else too. But it's important that you understand that this is just a luxury thing. It's nothing that we actually need, and you will find that in truth it has very little real lasting value."
Do you understand how devastated I am by this selling out so fast? I have checked massdrop/drop on a daily basis for this keyboard since it's last drop. My last class is finally dismissed to go to their buses and I rush home to get on my computer and order...only to find out it's sold out. Unbelievably devastated. Please tell me you have more in stock.
As long as the finish of the case and plate is 1st Class here then all's good.
Your next job is to start fixing the Stabs on these keyboards. Like making them work smoothly and correctly with every switch applied to your PCB/plate.
I owned the Excalibur for a good 6 months so I can tell you from first hand experience.
The Excalibur uses very low quality components to achieve its low price point - paper thin aluminum casing and plate, cheap clone switches, low quality abs keycaps with awful font, zero programmable pcb.
I also owned the vortex race 3 which is very similar, and uploaded a YT video that compares the typing sound. Overall, incremental component quality improvements cost significant money but results in noticeable ux improvements. The ALT will represent a step up from the vortex race 3, and at least 2 steps up from the budget boards like drevo Excalibur.
