These things sound great with the exception of some treble peaks that can result in sibilance on certain tracks. It depends a lot on recording quality and source as well, the ifi hip dac 2 does a decent job smoothing things out but some tracks can still be harsh. That said, you can easily EQ the treble down a little and they are otherwise great headphones and a great entry into planar magnetic headphones (most of which seem to have peaky treble) and the bass, while possibly slightly lacking in quantity, Is made up for with quality, certain songs with punchy bass lines sound sooo good on these. I don't think they're as good overall as the hd6xx, but they are also less expensive and more comfortable (for me at least) the 6XX are great for short listening sessions but the clamp can be too much after a while (I have a larger head) but the 4XX with it's larger ear cups and lesser clamp force I could (and have) fall asleep wearing. So they definitely have a place in my line up, the Soundstage is also much better than the 6XX, I'm not sure if soundstage is better than my hd599, it's different and they both have their strengths but the 4XX has better overall sound quality than the 599s, the 599s have excellent Soundstage and a fairly neutral FR with more upper bass/lower mids than either the 4XX or 6XX, and less peaky treble than the 4XX, but what it has in quantity it lacks in quality compared to either, that goes for bass treble and mids, it's more neutral than the 4XX and as neutral as the 6XX but doesn't sound as good overall and has less detail and separation. So the 4XX is sort of in-between the 599 and 6XX but it does have it's own strengths, the quality of it's bass/sub-bass exceeds both and gives it a distinct sound profile, and it handles EQing very well with very little distortion, so a bump in the bass and a smoothing out of the treble really makes these shine, they are still fantastic for the price (especially if you wait until they are on sale, which they invariably will be at some point) without EQ but the EQ really brings out their best.
