Oh lord, never thought I'd see the day massdrop started dropping ESEE products. Too bad I already have the 6, I'll be hanging out to see a 4 or 5 on here though.
As much as I'd love it, I couldn't justify buying another big knife. Can only imagine the grilling I'd get from my better half. A shorter ESEE though, that I could justify...
I bought a lot of stuff from Massdrop. I'm kinda OK with the long waiting, and I'm somewhat OK with no-return or difficult-to-return policy. For us to get a great deal from Massdrop, we have to put up these things, and for that I'm 100 percent OK. But what I'm really not OK is that lately, and especially in the Blades Community, the drop in price is easily matched by Amazon and even regular retailers. You want an ESEE 6? You can get it cheaper, faster and with a lot more variety of styles than here. Here's the place I'd go for: https://www.theknifeconnection.net/esee-knives-esee-6p-b-black-plain-edge-fixed-blade-w-grey-linen-micarta-handle-black-sheath-clip-plate/
I've had one for years. Fantastic knives. Here's a little off-topic anecdote:
I paracord-wrapped the sheath and one day was try to tighten it up... with the blade still inside. Accidentally pulled the blade out, and instinctively tried to replace it (in a split second).
Long story short, it went completely through my left hand and stuck about an inch out the other side. Somehow, it missed all the tendons etc that control my index and middle fingers - it went straight between them! I now have a scar that would make Jesus pround.
Awesome knife. For anyone interested, would highly recommend springing for the TKC G10 scales. Really improves the ergos due to the stock handle, which is very blocky.
I did order a custom sheath in desert camo since I got the dark earth blade.
same deal with the izulla2, not to worried about handles at this point. I have large hands, so maybe they will work for me. I have a number of knives, and yes, my dissatisfaction is always with the sheath. You would think with the money they charge they would give you an adequate sheath, I guess the sheath makers need to take our money as well. I can understand if you want something special, but the one that it comes with should fit the price.
I totally agree with you on custom Knife Sheaths. I prefer Kydex Sheaths because they do no absorb water like Leather Sheaths when they get wet. There are some nice Kydex Sheath manufacturers out there that make some quality Sheaths. A few that I have used in the past are AZWELKE (http://www.azwelke.com/), Red Feather (http://redfeathergear.com/) and Buy Brown (https://buybrownind.com). Now if you really want to go all out, check out Yellow Hawk (https://yellowhawkcustomkydex.com/) ..... But make sure you have deep pockets.
Order yours at The-Knife-Connection for less money with free priority shipping. Massdrop or now "Drop" is falling out of what made them so great. This is really disappointing. Selling standard products at retail prices is not why we came to Massdrop.
As others have said, you need to do price comparisons before you buy. That being said, the ESEE 6 is an awesome knife for camping and bushcraft for the fair price. Yes, there are other knives made of 3V and so on, but you will be spending a lot more money. You also can't beat ESEE's warranty either, one of the best in the industry. For those who want fancier steels...... Take at look at Swamp Rat Knife Works RatManDu , Survive! Knives GSO-5.1 or GSO-6, or if you really want to spend some money take a look at one of the Busse INFI steel knives. 1095 with the right heat treat will work just fine and if you are in the field and have to sharpen it, I would much rather have it than some of the supersteels. I've got knives in S35V, CPM 3V, INFI and so on but like I said before, ESEE 6 is a great knife at a fair price.
Well, they do say it's no questions asked for the whole life of the knife, regardless of where it goes or who it ends up with. I'd think that would mean no matter where it was sold you'd still be covered, but I haven't tried it, so I guess I can't be sure.
I'm not saying they did something wrong, I actually think Jonas is doing a great job with communication about this kind of thing. I just miss the days of HK axis's and the like being offered at significant discounts. Bums me out to see stuff like this where it's the headliner in a massdrop email and no matter how many we buy, the price won't drop.
You'll love the 6! I've had nearly all the ESEE fixed blade models for several years already and the 6 & 3 are my favs. The handles on the 3 & 4 are interchangeable and the 3 is a little thinner than the 4, but yeah, without much contouring and no palm swells, the flatter handles on the 3 & 4 definitely don't work for everyone. The 6 has a beefier grip and its handles are interchangeable with the 5.
PaLeeIt is a great steel for the field. The ESSE heat treat is awesome. It can take an incredible amount of abuse and comes back or more. It can take very hard use and is easily touched up in the field. That is why it comes with a lifetime no questions asked warenty. Many blades that are considered survival knives, like the ESSE 6, use carbon steel. Of those using 1095, the Rowen made steel used by ESSE, is in my opinion the best around. Now I will say I am very much and ESSE fan and own a variety of their blades. I love S35V in a blade and own many folders that use it. But it is not the type of steel that you can baton with and abuse like you would the ESSE 6.
PaLeeIt is more affordable and performs amazingly with a good heat treat.
Becker BK-2 in 1095 Crovan is a great example.
If all knives were made with super steels, I likely would have never got into knives.
Awesome, I was excited to see this! However I shop around, as anyone should, and the listed MSRP here 221.40 isn't the actual price anywhere, except maybe in brick-and-mortar stores. Most places have this knife for around 130, amazon has it for 116 and free shipping. This website should change their name to Mindrop. Would have bought at 80.
However MSRP is used here to represent how much you are saving, how much the price has "dropped." This is like going to Khol's and using the "original" price to determine how much you are saving. When the item never sells for the "original" price, you are not saving any money. I've come to realize Massdrop is a limited-supply full-price retailer.
