ED: The prices now, as of 4/18/18, are even worse. The same kit can be had for $16.48 inc shipping at Exotac, a savings of $3.26 over MD.
My original post follows below this line.
-------------------------------------------------
I'm sorry to say, this is not a good deal for US/domestic purchasers. The prices here basically match that of Exotac itself at their website:
http://www.exotac.com/freekey-system-3-pack-bundle/
with some minor variation over shipping costs. Note that shipping is free at Exotac once you hit $50, and you could buy an arbitrary amount of extra packs there, instead of the extras pack choices being tied to the quantity of FREEKey Systems you buy like it is here. So if you're planning on buying in bulk, then it makes absolutely more sense to go with them. If not...well, if you're only buying one, you're literally saving only 24¢ by buying from MD. Is waiting a month or so for these to ship worth twenty-four cents to anyone? I doubt it. I guess maybe avoiding the time investment of entering your info on a new site, and some minor satisfaction from having this listed among your transactions here for easy reference later.
I haven't really done the calculations to know if it makes sense to buy from Exotac if you're outside the US, but it's an open question. I urge people to try to figure it out. The product seems popular enough that it recurs often enough, and this drop in particular seems to be popular (96 sold at time of writing), so either people aren't doing the math/don't care, or there is some value proposition here, somehow.
GrayRaceCatHmm, that demolishes the deal for US buyers. With $3.50 First Class shipping - too expensive for such but wtvr - it comes to just $16.48 at Exotac's site. Here at MD, you'll pay $19.74.
The way I read the Massdrop advertisement is that you get (1) FreeKey System with (3) of the smaller rings to connect your keys. I don't read this that you get (3) FreeKey Systems and (9) smaller rings. If this is correct, Amazon is cheaper.
Hate to say it, but Amazon has the same set for 7.59 with free shipping (if you got Prime). Two sets are still cheaper than 1 set at Massdrop. I love Massdrop, but that is a bit too much of a difference for me.
Am I the only person who hates these things? The interesting innovation in the product is only on the large ring, which is too thick to directly fit on most keys. You're forced to attach keys to the smaller rings, which have uncomfortably sharp edges and are actually more difficult to put keys onto than regular keyrings, completely defeating the entire purpose of the product. In addition, having all the keys attached to those side rings made it so my keys wouldn't stack up well in my pocket, making them more bulky.
Hello everyone! Gene here at Exotac. This is a Swedish design but we have the manufacturing contract for the U.S. As for the thickness, you guys are correct...some keys have too small of an opening for them to fit directly on the main ring. That's where the accessory rings come in. They can be used to organize your other rings such as home, work, auto, etc., as well as for keys with smaller openings. The accessory rings open like a traditional keyring; however, since they are flat they are easier to open while maintaining strength and durability. I hope this helps.
They also make great Christmas and White Elephant gifts!
Great, simple, utilitarian ring set. What I’m surprised by is how much lighter and quieter my keys became. The squeezey aspect works as advertised, but in reality its the light, quiet, simple design that wins the day. Would order again; got an extra set and gave it to my brother.. who confirms the above as well. Effective improvement of an EDC essential.
BishopDeliciousAnswering this WAY late, as I'm just seeing it. The skull is the key to my Harley. Certainly not the stock option (I don't think), got the bike used and one of the keys was skully. o_O
