Product Description
Writing with this Grifos Nero Muse fountain pen is like holding a piece of history in your hand. The barrel is hand-turned from an ancient wood known as “bog oak,” found in the swamps of eastern Europe and carbon-dated to be up to 5,460 years old—that's roughly 1,000 years older than the Great Pyramid of Giza! I purchased a wood-bodied pen on MD years ago and it was very poor quality. I've been wary of wood ever since, however this is just nice enough to allay my fears. I'm in for one!
Hello, I understand. See we make these sellings here on Massdrop with a particular agreement about price, purchased quantity and deliver time. I mean that here on Massdrop you are able to purchase through their "Mass" order (wholesale) the pen at a very low price we deal with them. For this reason you have to purchase it through this site and wait for the delivery standard time. Sure we could sell it also on our web site in straight way but it will cost you for more (240 Euro that mean roughtly 273$). Sure you can understand this simple wholesale mechanism. Best from Italy. Some of these reviews might encourage you to buy this product, this is not such a review. This pen is terrible. For the price you are paying, it's ridiculous. Let's start with the nib, it's diabolical. Hard starts, extremely dry writing and the Fine writes like a Medium. The threads on this pen are so badly made, you can hear it scratching itself. I would advise a solid Pilot, Lamy or Pelikan instead. Please stay away.
IndianElf Hat tip to you Thw1990 your pen knowledge is even better then mine. For sure you have had more patience then me. Thank you and regards! Maurizio
IndianElf@Thw1990 I would add the for all us pen company is really impossible make long test on each pen we produce. Some of us do not test any, or better test one random let say one of 100 pcs. We test every but for sure we can't test them for more then a couple of lines or a couple of words. So yes you are right on this but I'm wonder to know if there is a way totest every and each in deep way and at the same time not spend so much time (and time is costs for us and for our customers in conseguence). Metal threads are nicer and long lasting then plastic ones but yes when they are brand new could be a little noisy but soon they became smoother and pleasing after some time of pen use since the two threads work one on the other. Lake brand new cars who need to its gears to work before be fine. Furthermore the plating process have an odd effect on threads crest, on them the deposit of precious metal (in this black pen is ruthenium) is far more thick then on pen flat part. Is an electrolytic effect that some guy degree in chemicals could explain better then me. This thick deposit on the crests soon is worn by the open-close action. Rgds!

I've seen The Beverly Hillbillies. I know what black gold is, and it's not Ruthenium.

This drop is limited to 50 units, but over 213 sold.... hmm.....
akshaycAll is correct. This drop is limited at 50 pcs but 213 was sold from when we start to offer it to MD customers some years ago in many drops. Is a long sucessfull story and I would take occasion to tanks all the customers who have purchases and appreciate this our handmade pen and continue to do that drops after drops! Best regards from Italy. Maurizio

I ordered the pen in the last drop but had to return it. Maybe it was just an off piece but I found a few quality control issues with it. - the cap wouldn't post - barrel and grip transition was a bit sharp and uncomfortable but these can be attributed to the barrel being ever so slightly off. Other than that, great customer service from MD especially though the Christmas season.
Thank you! One point for unposted cap party! ;-)

I may have to wait until next year to purchase a pen at this price level, but I'm entering the chat just to join with the others who have thanked the owner/maker for joining the discussion. That's very distinctive.

Thanks for the reply to my comment. One more thing I will mention is that I spent some time last night studying bog oak, which I did not know much about. It is an interesting subject.
PascalsPenI 100% agree with you. Is interesting thing. I discovered it some years ago in France, I saw it in old traditional things engraved by hand, form that moment I start to find a supplier and finally I find one in Ukraina also if, as wrote in an above message, isn't so easy get supplies from there. Regards!

Man, this drop couldn't have come at a worse time for me. I wanted it the last time it dropped but had to pass. Couldn't pass again, and this time we got the option for a matching roller ball, which I jumped in on. Shipping is close to my birthday so I can call it an early present to myself. It's my priciest purchase on massdrop with the white gold option which is my first gold nib. The roller ball will be for work use. My expectations are high but seeing the support from the owner I feel really secure with my purchase. March couldn't be further away!

BoomtownHappy early birthday!
Apologies for the yellow gold photo - this was an error. Due to the overall design and color of the pen's hardware, the gold nib upgrade is a matching white gold. :)

stubnib, I recently received my stingray leather pen with a steel broad nib and it is a beautiful pen which is well made and writes very nicely. I want to make this statement in support of both your workmanship and the Bock nibs. I do have a question regarding those of your pens which have a great deal of silver. I have not ordered a silver pen because I am concerned about whether the silver will tarnish and what maintenance will the silver require. Could you comment on what we can expect from the long-term experience with such beautiful silver? Thanks, again.
SunsetShoresHello, sorry for my late reply but your message come overnight here in Italy.Thank you for your positive words on our craftman made pen! We are glad you enjoy it. About silver and silver care: First the real silver will tarnish. No discussion about. Be aware from silver that not tarnish since could be also fake. There is many feeling about in the world. I could say that in Latin counties like Latin America or Spaign but also in Italy and Greece the people like natural silver and it MUST tarnish for a double reason, first is a warranty that it is real silver, second there is the saying that silver must become old as it owner and with its owner. There is also some thing we usually do as rhodium plating the silver bodies of the pens, with the rhodium protection silver never became tarnish but also the color of the pens change slightly becaming "steely". Also under the rhodium plating there could be any kind of metal (brass, copper) and since it is covered with rhodium plating you will never know if it is indeed silver or not what you purchase. At this point you have to ask to see the hallmarks and take note of the number stamped on the hallmarks and make a search to see if these numbers are or not registered in silversmith lists of the country of production (for example we have hallmark number 28 AO and in the European Union comunity only our silversmith company have the right to stamp with that number and grant you customer that the object came from real silversmith people). Last: tarnished silver isn't difficult to take clean: if you use daily the pen it will remain clean due to the use, but if you leave it in some place and months will pass it will tarnish and at that point you could purchase in stores special clothes to clean it (we too sell them on our website) but be aware that the chemical substances on the cloth clean the silver but corrode the gold plated pen parts (if any) so avoid to clean these yellow parts. A very usefull and easy way is use baking soda powder. Put a spoon of it on a cloth and on it put some drops of water just to get a paste, then polish the pen with it and just after wash it under tap, the silver will shine again. Note that backing soda too is slightly abrasive so do not do it every day! Last note: Tarnish process isn't the same in all the world, it is related to air pollution since is the sulfure oxide in the air that make tarnish, less sulfure less tarnish. Sulfure oxide came from engines expecially diesel engines. So if you silver pen became fast and easely tarnished be aware that the air you breath isn't the best for silver but in special way for your health... An our wholesaler customer in Mexico City (one of the most polluted city of the world) could not purchase silver pens without rhodium plating otherwise within 2 weeks only all the pens became near black. A nightmare... Hooping my rough english was enough good to understand what I mean! Regards from Italy Maurizio

First, I'll apology to reader every one. I'm sorry, using of poor English sentence.
I have sister-pen of this pen. That brand name is Cesare Emiliano made in Italy. Perhaps the base manufacture I think that is the same, so I’ll write an impression about this pen. My pen nib is a 18KT. Also barrel is horn of water buffalo. So cannot be a comparison of the hard and soft about nib. But, not so much of a difference in terms of weight, so I think can be mentioned the impressions about the balance. It's a very nice matching in my hand. Regarding a weight, might slightly entering the heavy category, It has brought a good effect for the balance and preeminence stability of this pen. Not tired. Price, also much cheaper compared with Cesare brand. There is a combines the high performance and look of beauty. I decided to buy this pen also this time.
