He's not suggesting that only the best, expensive gear should be offered, just that it should be labeled appropriately. Full disclosure: I own this tent and love it (I actually just used it on Friday out of my car), but it is in no way whatsoever an "ultra-light" tent by any standards.
I have to agree, but really it's not a big deal. Maybe a "Camping" community would be a good category to add. That said, Massdrop and the UL community are not so busy that it's difficult to scroll past or ignore the non-ultralight products. The words/terms get blurry, especially these days, but "ultralight" really just refers to a pack base weight of under 10 pounds...not to individual pieces of gear. To that end, however, the Big Three for UL gear lists are generally 2lbs or less each. For a two-person tent, it should be below or very close to 3lbs to have any hope of making a UL list. This is a perfectly backpackable tent, well made and at a super price point, but it's a far cry from approaching ultralight. The current hammock suspension deal is another great example of a "camping" item rather than an ultralight one, considering that it weighs 3-4 times as much as a good ul hammock suspension setup. Just my friendly two cents.
There is no real standard for ultralight other than you are generally carrying less than 20 lbs. We get it this does not make your list of what you'd choose to have in your 20 lbs. I'd hardly call this a car camping tent else you'd have to really enjoy having no room while being in this tent with a second person. If I'm going car camping this is not the tent I'd want to bring out of my collection of tents for two people. I'd pick a 4 man tent or so I have room to move without bumping into the person next to me. I do however take this tent with me backpacking and kayak camping. It folds up nice and compressed and at the weight and price I agree you can hardly beat it. It's a breeze to setup.
As for the category name, there are lots of things in this world I don't agree with and this is hardly one I'd take the time to argue for. However I'm going to take the time to back Massdrop on this one. This site is not setup to have a billion categories for you to filter through like a retailer's website. It's more of a place you browse through the offerings to see if it fits your wants and needs. There are going to be things that loosely fit the name. Some things are going to be more ultralight than others. Heck, sometimes it's not even the best price with things like Amazon around. Half the time when I price check I could have it at my house in two days for $5 more. Does that bother me enough to complain to Massdrop, no.. Because like anything else there are going to be good deals, ok deals, and things that don't quite fit into my preferences like how to categorize an item in a place that doesn't have a whole lot of categories. There are quite a few things on this site that I think are cool, but would never pay even the discounted price that's being offered because I don't agree it's worth that value. Again, preference is different per person. Thank you Massdrop for the opportunity to thumb through your offerings.
Yeah I agree about the beginner stuff. I've tried to go to their classes to see if I could pick up some tips/tricks for when I'm outdoors. Most of it is like starting from scratch and not for people that have spent any significant time outdoors. At most I might get like one or two ideas at most that I hadn't thought of previously. Still my favorite toy store. I think Massdrop is my second favorite only because I can't play with things first.
Why does this keep getting more expensive? When I joined this drop about a year ago, it was $79. Since then, I have directed multiple people to this drop when it comes back. But now you are spending over $100 for the tent. I know, it's not much, but it is deterring people I refer.
That makes more sense. Thank you for replying. I guess I keep forgetting that this is a reselling community and not the actual vendor, so we aren't in charge. I retract my complaint. :p
Also, don't listen to the ultralight extremists. This tent is super light compared to my Walmart brand 2 person tent.
They are more likely to find a discount off a $600 tent by contacting the vendor and asking for one that has a stitching accident on it, rather than expecting the minimum 10 people to pay $500 for the tent on MassDrop.
Yeah, your right. I've been buying from amazon more because massdrop just ain't bringing home the deals anymore. Last purchase was an alite mantis chair that arrived defective. It was an ok price but I bought a second from amazon for about 12 dollars less.

Man I was so tempted to get this as it was one of the top items on my wishlist, but I think I might pass on this drop as I read that there is a big condensation problem if used with the rainfly and you didnt stake out the guylines!
Anyone else here who has had it before and can comment on the condensation issues?
that'll be a problem with just about any two-layer tent. The difference here is that there are no top vents (which can definitely help) and only one door/vestibule (less options for ventilation). But even in tents with more venting, you'll still get moisture if the inner touches the fly.
I got this tent for $40 at an REI basement sale. The reason someone brought it back after one use was "not waterproof". I'm pretty sure they just didn't stake out the fly. The tent itself is freestanding (which I *love*), but if you put the fly on, you have to stake out the fly so it doesn't touch the tent. Even if it doesn't rain, condensation will get in.
My buddy just used this tent in Iceland. We made the following video showing how it stood up to rain and 30mph winds and did not break. Other brand tents had broken poles, not the Salida. Check out the video here: https://youtu.be/HjlljecaDFU
HikerJWe have Kelty Gunnison, which is very similar tent, and it has held through similar conditions out west. We are planning to take it to Iceland next fall...can't wait. Nice to know that it did great for you in those cool, wet and winding conditions.

Massdrop: once again there is no indication of an applicable manufacturer's warranty in the drop description as Massdrop's Terms state there will be if such a warranty is in force. Please consistently adhere to your own Terms so that we know the conditions under which we may be considering our purchases.
https://www.massdrop.com/terms
"RETURN POLICY - EFFECTIVE JANUARY 3, 2017
Some products purchased on Massdrop come with a manufacturer's warranty. These products will have the manufacturer warranty listed on the drop page. Products purchased on Massdrop that do not come with a manufacturer's warranty will be subject to a 30-day return policy detailed below. In the event a product exhibits a manufacturing defect or arrives damaged, Massdrop will allow members to return their product for a full refund. The issue must be reported to Massdrop Support no more than 30 days after the item is received. Claims submitted beyond this 30-day period will not be eligible for return. No replacements will be sourced."
Isn't up to the consumer to do their research and make an informed decision? You'd think someone living in Iceland would be taking that risk knowingly??

BlueCrownedOkay, sure. Here is the starting point of the consumers' research if they are considering buying this tent so that they may make an informed decision. As cited and linked earlier in the thread, Kelty's own warranty may be void if you purchase or use a Kelty product outside the United States. Further, the description of this drop (still, two months after I brought this up,) contains no language regarding warranty coverage by the manufacturer. Therefore, according to Massdrop's policy also cited and linked earlier in this thread, this product may only be covered by Massdrop's 30 day return policy. You are so informed. Caveat emptor.
This was just on sale on Kelty's website for $79 for the Christmas season, but good deal on the footprint. I'd really like to see Massdrop deals be a bit better or more dynamic than just a standard retail discount.
