Product Description
Comfortable enough for long listening sessions and compact enough to toss in your backpack and go, the Lasmex L-85 headphones should make fans of the discontinued Philips X1 very happy. They feature a similar open-back architecture and overall aesthetic, and both the ear pads and double headband are plushly padded and made from breathable protein leather Read More
With a detailed EQ profile applied (see below) and pads swapped to protein leather (standard oval) Brainwavz pads, I've found that the Lasmex L-85 headphones can be transformed into absolutely superb headphones. Though, their presentation is a little less spacious/airy than most open-back headphones.
I recommend installing a free Windows program called Equalizer APO. Then click on the green "+" and select "Graphic equalizer with variable bands". Then simply copy-paste the following customized EQ into the 'Edit text' bar:
GraphicEQ: 30 0; 35 -5; 40 -7.5; 45 -9; 52 -10.5; 60 -11.25; 70 -11.75; 80 -12; 120 -12; 160 -11.75; 200 -11.5; 250 -10.75; 315 -9; 400 -6; 500 -3; 630 -1; 800 0; 1000 -1; 1500 -3; 2200 -5; 4000 -7; 5000 -7; 7000 -7; 8000 -7; 10000 -7; 11000 -7; 13000 -7; 15000 -7; 17000 -7; 19000 -7; 20000 -7
In iOS (iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch), I recommend the Lounge, Treble Reducer, or Pop presets. Please read my older post for more information.
In summary, I highly recommended the Lasmex L-85 as long as you can use an EQ program... and change out their pads.
imkzfI haven't tried it, but if these headphones get another drop again, I'll be sure to post my impressions.
(Seriously though, these headphones are one of the best values in all of audio.)
With a solid build and quality driver, the Lasmex L-85 is truly a superb, open-back headphone with smooth metal and high-grade plastics, a satisfying headband clicker, and a single-sided 1/8" jack.
The catch is, pad-swapping is required for comfort. And unless you desire an extremely V-shaped sound - or listen to them on an iOS device with a headphone jack - EQ is also required.
For use with iOS devices, I recommend Brainwavz Micro Suede Oval Pads. (No EQ needed.) For use with the after-market pads and/or a DAC/amp of your choice, EQ will need to be engaged to remove the excessive bass and treble.
(A customized Equalizer APO profile will be added to this post.)
mattrisI am new to audiophile world and my preference is to have a headphone with decent bass and good sound stage. Can your recommended EQ for this headphone satisfy my needs? I am planning to use it with Sabaj da2/smsl idea. Can you suggest whether using the aforementioned amp increase SQ and soundstage even further? Thanks in advance.
nlarsensmithLet me welcome you to Audiophilia. You probably won't simply arrive and stay in one place, so prepare yourself for a journey...
I haven't listened to the small, plug-and-play Sabaj DS2 or SMSL Idea. You'd have to read reviews that mentioned their relative SQ and how they present the sound-stage. If you're in the market for a lower-price DAC/amp, I recommend the bigger (but non-battery-draining) FiiO Q1 mkII, which will provide better sound quality than those Sabaj or SMSL units.
Keep in mind... If you decide to get a pair of Lasmex L-85s, you absolutely must be able to configure a detailed EQ profile. Check out my other posts.
Hey mattris, this is dimetime. I got the LASMEX L-85s yesterday and I was going to EQ them using the updated post you told me to check out and I can't seem to find that particular post. I'm new to this site and I'm not sure if I'm overlooking it. Is there any way you could repost your EQ instructions somewhere I can easily find them? Or send them to me somehow? According to your posts about the L-85s, I prefer to use your EQ method. Thank you
I wouldn't use fidelios without EQ either - and even after, the bass distortion makes it a pretty bad headphone. I'd rather use one of these Equalized than an expensive yet inherently bad headphone like the Fidelios.
Catman420Do you mean the earpads? They're easily replaceable. Just pull one side of the earpads to expose the lip that wraps around the plastic frame. Then work the pad to pull it off.
Since they encompass all but the largest of ears, the popular Brainwavz (HM5) protein leather pads are more comfortable than the stock pads. Though, I recommend the Brainwavz angled sheepskin pads, which also improve the solidity and impact of the sound.
TWO SCOOPS OF EQUALIZER REQUIRED
I own two Lasmex L-85 headphones. My impressions:
Build quality is stellar: smooth metal and high-grade plastics used throughout. They have and open-back design, with less sound leakage (out) that most open-back headphones. Comparatively, a fair amount of outside sound is let in.
The L-85 stock earpads' openings are too small to encompass normal-sized ears, so they would be classified as having an on-ear design. Fortunately, the pads are easily replaceable. To improvement comfort and to sound-stage width, I replaced the stock pads with various Brainwavz Earpads.
Unfortunately, the L-85's frequency response is drastically V-shaped, with a wide bass-to-lower-mids hump and too much treble. Using Brainwavz protein leather earpads installed, a FiiO Q1 mkII DAC/amp, and a free Windows program called Equalizer APO, simply copy-paste the following into the 'Edit text' bar of the Graphic Equalizer:
GraphicEQ: 30 0; 35 -5; 40 -7.5; 45 -9; 52 -10.5; 60 -11.25; 70 -11.75; 80 -12; 120 -12; 160 -11.75; 200 -11.5; 250 -10.75; 315 -9; 400 -6; 500 -3; 630 -1; 800 0; 1000 -0.5; 1500 -2; 2200 -4; 4000 -6; 20000 -6
In iOS (iPhone, iPod, iPad), the Pop , Lounge, or Treble Reducer presets are suitable.
Brainwavz Hybrid Earpads improve the airiness of the sound. I configured this profile with them installed:
GraphicEQ: 20 0; 25 -4.25; 32 -7.5; 40 -9.5; 50 -10.75; 60 -11.5; 70 -11.9; 80 -12; 100 -12; 160 -11.75; 200 -11.25; 250 -10; 315 -8; 400 -5; 500 -2.5; 630 -1; 800 0; 1000 -0.75; 1500 -2.25; 2200 -4; 4000 -7; 20000 -7
And finally, on another pair of L-85s (that have less bass and treble than the first headphone), I installed Brainwavz Angled Sheepskin Leather Earpads and configured this profile:
GraphicEQ: 21 0; 25 -3.5; 30 -6; 36 -8; 44 -9.5; 53 -10.25; 65 -10.75; 80 -11; 120 -11; 160 -10.75; 200 -10.25; 250 -9.5; 315 -8; 400 -5; 500 -2.75; 630 -1; 800 0; 1000 -0.75; 1500 -2.25; 2200 -4; 4000 -5; 20000 -5
The driver used in this headphone is likely the one discussed here: https://www.head-fi.org/threads/lasmex-l-85-headphones.817590
In summary, the Lasmex L-85 is a well-constructed, value-conscious headphone with capable drivers. With some initial effort (pad exchanging and customized EQ applied), they can be transformed into an absolutely superb headphone that will compare favorably to more expensive models.

Have you had any issues with connections inside the cups perhaps? I agree (and we talked too) about the build quality and such, however I believe I've had mine longer than you. I've had my right ear cup intermittently drop out on occasion. Just curios if you've had anything interesting going on or if it's just me.
I find these to be pleasant enough even without an EQ, but it is great to know that my ears can tell a V-shape curve.
ZeypherUndellusI got mine a few weeks ago. No drop-outs or cable connection issues.
I invite you to try-out my EQ correction for these. Curious to hear your thoughts on what it does to the sound.
