I realize that tube rolling can be addictive, but as much as possible I would like to get this with a good set of tubes and then stop as this is not my primary amp. I expect to use it with a Grado 225 and primarily with an AKG K7XX (and rarely with a Foster Purpleheart).
Does it make sense for me to upgrade to either the 6CQ6 (+ $13) or the WE408 (+ $28) and then be done for now?
I would be ok going with the WE408 if they are considered to be a good tube for this amp and my headphones.
jimpx10The WE408A tube is part of the EF95 family. Your best bet is to get the amp with the least expensive tubes and then go to Ebay and search for replacement tubes from the EF95 family, the same as WE408A, and you'll find a matched pair much cheaper that way. IMHO, you can find many different sounding tubes from the EF95's which will bring you much joy, not just the WE408A- which is just one brand of valve (tube). WE = Western Electric, 408a.
srfpunk138I've read many threads regarding tube rolling with the LD1+. The one advice that I get the most is you have to test your combinations (OpAmp, Tubes, Cans) until you get the one that most enjoyable to you. Sometimes a combination works for me but it may not work for you. With that said, the forums I visited agree that the WE408A is good with the OpAmp OPA2107. I use the OPA2107 with Voshkod 6ZH1P-EV tubes and HD598 and I love it. Hope this help. Cheers.
srfpunk138This is utterly not true, the WE403A or B is from the EF95 family, the WE408A is its own branch. The LD mk1+ has instructions to change from 6j1/EF95 to 408A. However, as i was new to tube amp and saw comments like these on less reputable forums, I replaced my pair of 408A with the Voskhod 6j1p-ev and it fried the amp, the tubes and headphone were fine but the amp wasn't.
