Product Description
Considering the Lumintop FW3A flashlight measures just 3.7 inches long, it’s hard to believe that it puts out up to 2,800 lumens and casts a beam as far as 200 meters—but that’s the kind of power we’ve come to expect from Lumintop over the years. Made with an anodized aluminum body, the FW3A can take a beating on the trail or when it’s tossed around in the toolbox Read More

Hi, I made the firmware for this light and managed the development and the group buy. Just wanted to let people know, if you have any questions, there's a lot of information available over at BudgetLightForum. The best places to start would be the main "FW3A, a TLF/BLF EDC flashlight" thread, and the "FW3A Troubleshooting / FAQ" thread. Not sure if I can post links here, but a google search should bring up the right URLs. There are things every FW3A owner needs to know, so it'd be a good idea to at least look at the quick start in the FAQ / Troubleshooting thread. At minimum, open it from the front, not the back. So far, most orders have gone through Neal's store... but now it's becoming available in more places, like PhotonPhreaks, FastTech, Skylumen, Banggood, and Drop. Most of these have coupons available to get it near the original group buy price. Some also have extras, like glow gaskets to put under the optics. And source code is available too, for those who want to really customize it. Anyway, check BLF for the full details.

Did I miss on here where there was no battery included with the purchase? I was hoping to open up the box and give it a try immediately. At least put "battery not included" next to the battery in the SPECS part of the details information.

Snagged a few of these from the BLF group buy and they truly are fantastic. I'm not a true flashaholic like most on that forum, so I will say those that aren't used to this type of interface are going to notice quite a learning curve, but it's not too bad. Between the manual and the info on the forum every question or issue I've had was quickly answered and fixed with simple clicks or adjustments. I'm running Samsung 30Q's in them and they fit perfectly with no rattling around inside like some of my other torches. The amount of light these small things can output is insane. Cannot wait for the next versions!

18650batterystore is also a great source. They are located in Atlanta, GA and they also package their batteries separately so they can ship to Canada.

You can get it from Neal’s website for less (although shipping might negate that), and support one of the people behind the project in doing so: https://www.nealsgadgets.com/collections/blf/products/tlf-blf-fw3a-edc-led-flashlight?variant=20770442608710 You also get the option of the high-CRI 4000K Nichia 219C, although I am waiting for the 4-LED Luminus SST-20 4000K 95 CRI version when it finally sees light of day.

The SST-20 version is now available to order on nealsgadgets.com (use the coupon code), with expected ship date of June 24th. Supposedly the copper version is also available for order but it wasn't when I checked yesterday. Titanium doesn't make sense as it is a poor thermal conductor which means the already short turn (1.5 minutes IIRC) will be even shorter due to thermal throttling unless you live in Siberia. There is also going to be a Toykeeper special edition in anodized bronze, blue, purple or silver with etched button, check the BLF thread for details.

I have both the FW3A and FW1A. I'm very ambivalent about both lights. There are some things I wish I knew prior to purchasing the FW3A. 1) The switch is WAY too sensitive. You cannot carry this loose in your pocket or clipped without it in lockout mode unless you want to heat up your pocket and leg real fast. It also feels nice and is very satisfying to click IMO. But the look and feel mean it has issues being practical. 2) The FW3A is small. Unless you have small hands you will engulf the whole light with a traditional tail clicky reverse grip. And it gets hot. So practically the only hold that you really have unless cranking back the brightness is a cigar grip. 3) It's floody. I mean not a little floody, but a LOT floody. The thing has like no throw. Compared to my zebralight 62w, it functions basically the same outdoors, and the 62w is an 840 lumen light that is generally considered pretty floody. Even changing out the optic only improves it a bit. A small room.. yeah insanely brighter. Everywhere else... meh not in a meaningful way. 4) The thermal sensor is not calibrated at the factory. Some sellers calibrate it before sending, but odds are you will have to do it if you want it to run right and give you the most brightness for maximum time. 5) The firmware and UI are nice. But the cheat sheet is not a cheat sheet, it's a terse refresher. REad the printed instructions, better yet watch one of the videos demonstrating the UI on youtube. It sells tons of places with a decent discount. Unless Drop is doing thermal calibration or getting them to you faster than ~3 weeks, this isn't a great deal.

Go to Nealsgadgets.com and use code NDFW3A, you can get the light for $35.20. There are also other mods you can buy for the light such as different optics for a more focus or floody beam. Optics with tritium, glow tail switch, glow gasket & lens. Bad deal MD.

Yeah that's the hidden catch with Neals. His business have grown to be more than he can handle. If you do a quick Google search, many people had had a similar experience. Mine has been great so far so fingers crossed. Did you manage to sort out your order or did PayPal take care of it?

IAmACheapSkatePaypal defaulted in my favor since Neal never responded throughout the entire process. I ended up getting stuff via others on BLF and illumn to avoid Neal. Its awesome he carries everything but his communication is so horrible I don't mind paying the premium to know I will actually get stuff for my money.

Getting smart on 18650 batteries, which can be dangerous. Recommend doing research so as to be forewarned / forearmed. This light requires (1) an unprotected, (2) flat-top, 18650 cell that is rated to (3) "continuously discharge" at over 10A. "A" is for amps. Any battery rated less than 10A may heat up to a dangerous level during use, which could damage the battery, the flashlight, and you! Need to be mindful of both the quality / manufacturer of the batteries and the charger you use. Drop, please include additional "Details" in this regard for similar drops in the future. Happy lighting to all!

SteverinoYou can safely use this light with standard/medium drain batteries...you just won't be able to run turbo (it may step down much sooner than it's already short time or it may not enter turbo at all). The temperature configuration can be adjusted as well (standard reference as well as step-down temperature...in fact it's wise for you to calibrate it when you receive it. The stock step down is 45C which is a very safe limit, so risk to any battery or the chips on the driver is mostly averted.). Many batteries, especially lower cost and off-brand ones, are only 6-8 amps but there are lots of more capable ones to choose from. If you were to manually and deliberately try to abuse the failsafes in this light, say by repeatedly entering turbo right after it steps down, then it's possible that you could heat up the battery enough to shorten its lifespan (dunno if you could actually cause it to vent, but maybe). It would take some effort to do this, and of course a person could do the same with alkaline or NiMH cells in the right light.

Great light for around the house. Not EDC. The electronic switch is way to easy to activate if you carry it on your person or in a bag. The battery does last forever due to the ability to ramp the modes. I have the copper version.

Just got mine, thanks for the pro tip. I like the smooth ramping but moonlight when locked is not very useful except in the middle of the night.
