Hey everyone! Many people have started to receive their boxes, and we'd like to create a thread showing all your loot! Please take a single picture of your mystery box with the contents inside (be careful not to have any personal identifying information in the photo!) Post it as a reply here! P.S. I'll probably send some leftover goodies to a few photo contributors ;)

KevinSeriously, f**k Drop for how they treated us in this process. We bought two $250 boxes. One was lost in transit and never delivered, one came missing the most valuable components of the box. To compensate us for the missing items, valued at over $250, we were given $50 in store credit.

Hey everyone, we're at the 28th of May and embarrassingly everything hasn't shipped yet. 10-20 boxes are going out every single day from the warehouse and I've been asking them to pick up the pace. They're on the other coast- our communications are somewhat limited. Apparently it's just taking time because the last boxes to go out are more time consuming to pack (they're quoting me 30-60 minutes of labor per box).
I've gotten authorization to give people a $10 credit to their account if you don't have tracking as of May 28th (today). In addition, if you're tired of waiting you're welcome to cancel your box. I sincerely apologize for the delay and will continue to advocate to get these out the door asap.
On a somewhat funny note, I just got my box at the end of last week. I bought one because I wanted to go through the experience with everyone and see how it feels. I got 32" pants that don't fit, and I share in your clothing disappointment. 100% unexpectedly (and I assure you, completely randomly), I ended up with a DJI Phantom drone in my box. I have no interest in getting a prize from the pool so I'll use it as a giveaway as per my other post here: https://drop.com/buy/massdrop-mega-mystery-box/talk/2425776 I won't be doing the drawing until after people have had sufficient time to receive their boxes.
Lastly, despite the cluster with the last 20% of boxes being late (and dragging on forever), this has been far more successful than we would have imagined. People are, overall, very happy with the experience and I'm having talks internally with setting up something in the future with similar elements to this. It absolutely can't be the same (we don't have inventory left to liquidate, and the dollar-value we gave out here in these boxes was bonkers), but it looks like there's an appetite for mysterious curated boxes of cool stuff. I'll share more details with you once we have them.

no keepers but it was a solid box. Gave away the laptop to a friend’s 6 year old boy starting coding class. He is very happy with it. It is fitting for a little boy with RGB lights every where. I never got why gaming computers have to look so childish. It found rightful owner. I will gift others or trade

Isn't it what is worst with consumerist culture. People buying not what they need, or even what they want, but discounted STUFF. That will fill their house before it fill landfills. So you save 50% of imaginary price set by seller. The value for you is most likely still $0. Other then gambling addiction like with ingame loot boxes, what is the allure. Anybody can enlighten me?

$100 for a mystery? Um, no thanks. My local 'Orchids of Asia' has a similar mystery box deal, usually best resolved with a 10-day course of penicillin and a week away from work. It seems like a good idea until you put the beer down and start thinkin'.
The gambler in me looks at this as a pot odds comparison - promising $200 worth of goods for $100. The problem becomes is if half or more of the goods is junk I don't want. And looking at MD, there is a good chance I end up with a swatch of knitting goods, a pair of selvedge jeans at 92% odds they don't fit, or a zippo lighter - all things I have neither the need nor want to own. Say 25% of the items on Massdrop are things I like. Therefore, the expected value of the box is 25% of $200 - or $50. So I'm really paying $100 for probably $50 worth of things I want.
But wait! Unless I get the uber high dollar expensive item. Of which there are 75 items IIRC, say worth $500. So assume that 1000 people go for this box thing and each box is limited to one of the uber expensive items, I've got a 7.5% chance of getting one of those items. 7.5% of $500 is $37.5. And the odds of me liking/needing that item are probably about the same as every other item - 25%. So now the expected value of the uber item is $9.38 (rounding up).
So the total expected value of this item is $59.38 to me if 1000 purchase (actually, need 1000 equivalent $100 units are purchased, as the $250 units are essential buying the same $100 box 2.5 times).
So...yeah. Hard pass.

Massdrop has been extremely clear about the nature and risk of this drop.
Nonetheless, I predict much wailing and gnashing of teeth about a month from now when people open their boxes.
It will be real, and it will be fabulous :)

None572958Do you live under a rock? You can get random boxes from a lot of stores that operate like Massdrop. Stores that offer limited time products build up a lot of inventory, and suckers like me give in.

Couple Notes:
1) There should have only been one Audioengine D2 in there, the warehouse messed up when they packed it.
2) These boxes are reflective of the correct value, but these boxes happened to randomize as being top-heavy. Boxes are more likely to have more items, of lower value, than fewer items of greater value.
3) There's no clear separation of which products were in which boxes here, they just threw everything together.
4) People are asking how we determine "value"- to be honest we're purposefully vague. We aren't going through 40,000 things and looking up the current ebay market price of each item. We use our historical cost (what we paid for it) as a proxy for value. In many cases this is understating the market value, in some cases it overstates it (because the product has lost value since we bought it). Overall there's a pretty big cushion of "value" in the boxes so you will land at around "double".
5) We're doing our best to make this a fun and beneficial experience. If you have any doubts, please do not participate. You still have time to cancel your order. We're trying to be as transparent as reasonably possible here.

I'm currently an independent research consultant. I've jumped from project to project over the years. Most of the work I've done involved data sets from the U.S. Census Bureau, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, USDA Census of Agriculture, National Forest Service, Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (TIGER) GIS data, various sociological surveys, state archaeological survey data, CDC data, state health departments, and so forth. Most of the projects involved multivariate and geospatial analyses (correlative stats). I've also co-authored a few articles published in peer-reviewed professional journals. My C.V. is a bit long given my age. Edit: I've never had the pleasure of working on a project as high-profile as Brexit. Good on ya'!
