I just bought the HD 598 SR headphones a week ago on amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06WRMZZ45/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) for $140. How much of a mistake did I make?

I bought a pair of 598s from amazon on Black Friday 2016 for $95 and I absolutely love them. They are my first pair of open backs, really all I’d ever used before was a pair of Bose noise cancelling that my Dad bought me years ago and I won’t use them anymore unless I’m on an airplane. I use the 598s more for watching TV than I do for music since about the same time I bought them I also bought a great tube amp that has no headphone jack. Unfortunately my 6 year old daughter has also fallen in love with the 598s which is great because we can still communicate with her when she's watching a show or playing a game on her Kindle. I also just turned my wife onto the wonders of using the 598s to watch TV at night and she is hooked. I am in on the 58X drop due in June and am seriously considering joining this 6XX drop so everyone in the family will have their own Sennheisers. 😊

You don’t want to know... The HD598 are good, but... I bought a pair of regular HD598 two years ago... and then a year ago I joined the first drop of the HD6xx (under a previous Massdrop account, but that's another story...) and ... well, I haven’t used my HD598 once since I received my HD6xx just before christmas 2016... just my personal experience ... hope it helps...

The HD6XX's and smooth and a pleasure to listen to, the HD598's are brighter and grainy in comparison.

Well, the 598 is easier to drive and might be better suited for gaming based on the soundstage, outside of that... You might still be able to make use of Amazon's liberal return policy. :P
