How will it work with the E-MU Teaks/Ebonys? That 32 ohm impedance doesn't look too bueno.

BigEdMustaphaWhat that means is, the low impedance output is good for headphones with 32-100 Ohm impedance. I suspect this amp might be too warm for X00/e-mu though.

LStigmireAh, ok.
Are tubes on the E-MU more or less pointless? I wanted to get a decent tube amp one day to use with DT1990 and maybe E-MUs if possible.

BigEdMustaphaHow do you like the Beyerdynamic DT1990 Pros?
Thanks

KeeferThey're really nice. Good build quality and comfort. Sound is very detailed. Its strengths are in acoustic tracks, classical, classic rock and jazz I would say. When I listen to EDM and other electronic music, I prefer to use the E-MUs. More bass and a bit more casual and fun.

BigEdMustaphaHi. May I assume you are suggesting that tubes would simply add warmth to an already warm set of headphones? I have no experience tube rolling with this amp, but it might be possible to tighten up the sound signature. Sometimes, tube amps get a bad rap. A number of expensive tube amps have demonstrated a tight sound signature, more analytical than many solid state amps.

HollowStateI'm just looking for that "tube sound" as people call it. A new toy and a new sound to mix in with the collection. I don't make any assumptions either way, but generally what I hear is that tubes add warmth and "improve soundstage" if that's even a thing.

BigEdMustaphaThe "tubey" sound relates to one characteristic of a tube component. That effect is due to "rolloff". Some people do indeed equate that as "warm", but then what is it about headphones that are "warm"? Heck, Burr-Brown dac chips are described as "warm" Then, there are solid state amps that are actually designed in a manner to get a touch of warmth What I trying to say is that warmth is necessarily due to the innate nature of tubes, but something entirely different.
"...and 'improve soundstage' if that is a thing." I would have thought the difference between a narrow and a broad soundstage would have proven that it is a thing. Not trying to knock you, I was just surprised.

BigEdMustaphaThe reason I asked BigEd is that I own em too! I think they’re great, balanced from top to bottom and I LOVE the low end with the balanced pads. Much more fun than the neutral/analytical pads. I just don’t see much out there on these cans and I think people are missing the boat. Maybe it’s the price? Just received my HD6XX 2 days ago. I run a CD transport and an Astell Kern AK100ii to a Cary Audio Dac with a pair of tube (6922) analog output stage with Acoustic Zen IC’s and PC’s.
I just saw you and a few others talking about tube amps. I can share some info there, if anyome is interested.
I own both the Woo Audio WA3 and the Woo WA6. I‘be also owned the DarkVoice 336se (for a week) The WA3 is an OTL amp and the WA6 is transformer coupled. I play the WA3 70% of the time, the WA6 30%. They’re BOTH great amps with two totally different sound signatures.
Let me know if I can help or answer any headphone tube amp questions.

KeeferGood man.
What do you usually listen to on them? I was thinking about the WA7 Fireflies or WA6 SE, but didn't know what people's experience was with Woo's amps.

BigEdMustaphaIt depends on if you need a dac or already have one. The Fireflies has a built- in dac, the WA6 and WA6se do not have dacs.
I love Woo amps. I don’t work or advertise for them. Just sharing my experience. I’ve found the build quality, reliability and most importantly they sound great. I own the “entry level” amps and they’re flippin great! There is the hidden expense of tubes as they DO play a major role in tweaking the sound of your amp. NOS tubes are not cheap and you’ll quickly find you can easily tie up more $$$ in tubes than the amp.

BigEdMustaphaIt’s a 32 ohm tap, not output impedance. The actual output impedance is far lower.
If you are looking for tube sound this might not be the amp for you. This is a push-pull type amp and very low distortion. Most high powered tube amps were made this way a long time. For some reason almost no headphone amps use this topology, which is a shame since you can use cheaper ungapped transformers and still get good performance.
Edit: a bit of a correction. After talking with someone that knows a bit more about the design, it’s actually NOT a push-pull am. But it’s also not exactly a single ended type amp. It has a really special topology.
