Hey everyone,
We confirmed today that the Planck Light PCB's were not flashed properly at the manufacturer and they are arriving without the bootloader. This means your keyboard will arrive functional and usable, but without reprogramability.
Right now we are working with Jack to restore the reprogramability that was designed to be there. At the moment we are looking to fix this by creating a module that will allow you to flash the PCB using the In-System Programming which should be the fastest and simplest method.
That said, we will need some time to create and test that module. We are evaluating timelines with our manufacturer now and will reach out to everyone with any updates and an expected ship date as soon as we have more information.
My apologies for this issue and we are working to get everything taken care of as quickly as possible.

Hi there Mark, did you get sny answers because of the possible import fees? Massdrop should at least tag the package as a gift or something. I already paid custom fees for almost 180$, which cost me almost 50€ with DHL handling. It will be frustrating.

danglingelseIt was 'declared' at a worth of 1$, so the envelope slipped straight through here (germany).
Quick FAQ! Comment here with any questions you have and I'll update this list!
I want a different option with a pre-assembled keyboard There are only three configurations we're offering for pre-assembly (available in MIT or Grid):
* Black case / Tactile switches / Black alphas with white mods * Navy case / Clicky switches / White alphas with black mods * Silver case / Linear switches / White alphas with black mods
Selecting options other than "N/A assembled keyboard selected" will cause errors - if you want a different combination, you'll need assemble things yourself and select "Planck Light Kit"
Are parts from the Planck Light compatible with the regular Planck? Unfortunately not! The Planck Light has a smaller grid spacing to match Kailh's keycaps
Is the Planck Light compatible with MX or Matias switches? Nope - just Kailh's PG1350 switches
Are there any other keycap options? Because of how new these switches are, Kailh is currently the only manufacturer of them, so we have limited options!
What color is the PCB? Matte black with gold traces
What chips are on the PCB? One at90usb1286 (128KB flash memory), and two IS31FL3731 chips
What about the FCC stuff? The Planck Light will be tested for part 15 compliance, and this has been built into the timeline!
Is the 2u key in the center actually Enter? It's space, and will be blank in the shipped keysets :) (Enter was a 2u key in the demo kits we got)
Will this support MIT and Grid layouts? Yeap! Both are supported by the PCB and LEDs, and all keysets come with the correct keys for both
What about a stabiliser for the 2u key? I didn't think one was needed for the 2u key, and unfortunately we don't have any option to include one at this time
Is there a plate? No plate! None's needed with this construction

I'm sure I'm not the only one who would pay extra for a plate, even though it's technically not required.
nichetypeYou can probably have one milled independently once you have the board in hand and can measure every thing

At some point the community needs to reject prices like this.
We are suppose to be a community of enthusiasts, centered around a common love of niche products. Prices like this, and so many others, suggest we are viewed as a impulsive mob, willing and ready to be extorted.

Yeah, it's true. I told myself I FOR SURE wouldn't buy it if it were above $100. It was, so I didn't jump into the... drop. Jack's designing great products, and I'm sure the next Planck will hit a lower price point, but with more storage so the custom firmware can be maxed out.

So is a $1000+ phone, and a $1,000,000+ car. You don't have to buy it, but if you have the money and you feel comfortable in using it then you buy it.
That is simple economics, not an emotional response. Marketing plays here, too. Could this be produced on a larger scale to drive the price down? Of course. There is more to business than simple profit margins.
If you can make less per product and sell more, your profit at some point will be the exact same as if you sold less but at higher margins.
This is where brand protection and market placement comes into play. Regardless of how good a product is, the vast majority of the population correlate price with pristige and quality.
I completely understand your opinion in that this was priced too high. This is the "invisible hand" you hear about behind economics. It has reached out to you in this case, but has not yet touched many others.
In an otherwise free market, the only thing affecting supply, demand, price point is regulation. That's a whole new issue, and doesn't apply here at all.
We've verified the design for the ISP flashers, and I believe they're getting ready to go out - I think @YanboWu will be able to provide more details on that front. We're working on the full instructions, but it's basically just plugging it into the Light like this, plugging the Pro Micro into the computer, and flashing the Light's bootloader/production firmware through that. The Pro Micro is also socketed, so you'll be able to use it for other projects :)

2 things I'm not seeing as options on the drop:
Option for DIY assembly and select MIT or Grid style... in fact, the DIY doesn't even tell you if you're getting an MIT or Grid. Option for ALL black keys WITH LEGEND (as depicted in the attached image) or option for all white keys with legend.
Given that there are only 13 days left with this drop... these things really should be fixed soon!
Jack and/or MD! Please update this!!

I think it's sort of romantic... people probably just put pressure because they want to say that they're excited about the product. I would like to know what kinds of jokes the workers are cracking about us...😇

You will be disappointed if you buy this and want to change the keycaps. There are not a lot of keycaps that work for this. Start with cherry MX style and then experiment with other switches later if you are interested in customizing keycaps. Otherwise this seems good for portability.
Personally I think that trying a cheaper MK to see if you like it first is the way to go. I started with an Azio Hue and then upgraded to a K-Type when I was sure I wouldn't lose interest in the hobby in a month. Then you can lend out your cheaper board to your friends and family to convince them that they need to get in on this...

I really wish I could get black alphas / black modifiers, or even a second keycap kit so I could swap things around.
If anyone got white alphas / black modifiers and wants to trade my white modifiers, let me know.

YanboWu@YanboWu Hi, is the bootloader issue (or lack there of) affecting all boards ? Can you acknowledge it and keep us informed on the fix ?
Things that will be fixed in this drop:
* PCB will be flashed with the bootloader * Metal SMD standoffs instead of the spinning plastic ones * The stabilizer plate will be sized correctly

jackhumbertIs it possible to get a set of the metal standoffs and install them on the first version of the board? I'd like very much for mine to have them.
