Product Description
As much a work of art as a set of functional dice, this polyhedral set is made from blue sandstone with engraved Arabic numerals on each side. The deep blue color of the dice, when paired with the golden numerals, calls to mind a golden ship flying through the galaxy Read More

Just so people are aware, these dice are NOT made out of REAL sandstone, no natural sandstone looks like this. The material of these dice is made in a lab and is actually a type of glass filled with glittering powder. I believe the professional term is goldstone. This shouldn't take away from the look of these dice, they are one of the nicer ones I've seen on Massdrop, but it is made from man made material, NOT natural stone.

The material is nicknamed blue sandstone, so it's not lying about anything. But it is leaving out what it actually is...

Just because they say it doesn't make it true, and besides, @Ejtastic is right when he says it is nicknamed blue sandstone. Blue sandstone does not mean sandstone that is blue. It would look completely different.

This set is beautiful in person, with a lovely weight to it. Unfortunately, mine arrived with the d12 already slightly sheared, and the d20 was slightly malformed (it seems to be leaning towards one side). I really love this set, but I was a little disappointed with the quality control. Not sure if this is on Massdrop's side, or MDG's.

I absolutely love these dice, but do be careful with them. I keep them in the included bag and make sure that they are packed in such a way that theres little to no wiggle room, and always make sure to carefully remove them and put them back, but at one point the d8 came out with one of the corners sheared right off. It was able to be fixed with just a dab of superglue, but I haven't used them since it happened because I don't know how well it is going to hold up, and they are now just for display.

LaserEmuFYI, when I spoke to the MDG folks at GenCon, they told me that if a stone die breaks under reasonably gentle use and storage, they'd replace the die. That's the only reason I took the plunge and got these and the Opalite set.

Make sure to have a nice soft box to roll them in. They may bounce off surfaces and chip or crack. Beautiful and fragile

Is it safe to assume that these dice are 16mm?

Fryed_MustardI don't work for MDG, but comparing these to my other standard (16mm) size dice, they appear to be the same size. Hope this helps!

A few questions. Do these chip with regular use? How durable are they? Also, did everyone have a crooked 3 on their 8 sided die or was that just a one off?

I just got these today (12/11), and holy smokes are they beautiful in person! I have the engraved Tiger Eye, Opalite, and Amethyst from MDG as well (most purchased here on Massdrop), and I think these just edged the Tiger Eye out as my favorite!
Two things: The engraved numbers on these seem "shallower" than on the other engraved gemstone dice. To be honest, I *thought* they were stickers when I first opened the package, and I took out my other engraved dice to compare. When you run your finger over the sandstone dice, the engraving feels like it's flush with the surface of the sandstone (i.e., a sticker). With the other gemstone dice I have, there's a definite depression where the numbers are engraved. HOWEVER, I spent a good deal of time trying to scratch the numbers off the percentile dice (since it's my least-used dice) with my nails, and they didn't budge. So I'm convinced they're engraved as the drop said. (I was mostly worried because of the drop price--if I paid that much for stickers, I would have been pissed! But the dice are so beautiful that I would have probably kept them anyway ;) .) I wanted to mention this since some other commenters had concerns that these were not actually engraved.
Another, and this is the first time this has happened to me with an MDG set, is that the 3 on my d8 is not centered. I've heard MDG is good about replacing items like this, but I'm not sure if I want to go through the process. It's a minor issue to me as it's still clear what face of the dice it's on. But I included a picture (the die alone and next to the d8 from my Tiger Eye set). Like I said, out of four sets of engraved dice from MDG, this is the first time I had a quality control issue like this.

I also will mention that I actually use all my gemstone dice in gameplay. I roll them in a box that has a little bit of padding in the bottom and felt over the top of the padding (it's a home-made box; I spend all my gaming money on dice, clearly!). I roll the dice one at a time and try to keep from hitting the edges of the box, although it does happen--so far I've had no chipping or other issues. I haven't used the sandstone dice yet.

Massdrop is the only place I've ever seen goldstone referred to as "sandstone", sandstone looks nothing like this. Blue goldstone is my favorite however and this set of dice looks beautiful!

EvocatusHow's the wear and tear? I've seen my friends with similar dice but they damage easily

prplprinceI wish I could tell you with assurance. They are display pieces for me. I suspect that being sandstone, they would be susceptible to damage more so than other types of stones. While anecdotal, I transported them in the pouch for several days while I showed them to friends before placing them in their display. There are no errant marks.

looks like another engineered material (blue goldstone in this case, which is Venetian glass flecked with gold colored flakes, NOT a natural sandstone) that’s been ground by hand with brittle corners and irregular shape. A lot like the set I bought. Gamer bait. I am steering clear of MDG. Drop keeps hawking their stuff but they look like they specialize in making dice out of bad ideas that only sound good, and I hate dishonest ad copy. What’s specifically wrong? Dice can’t be hand ground unless it’s perfect work because they need to be uniform and made of a uniform material or the rolls won’t be random. Most materials that make them look ritzy also make them into lousy dice. That includes stone of any sort (natural stone is irregularly structured around inclusions and impurities, and it’s also more likely to chip) or any kind of enameling (which will have irregular thickness due to flow). Even little gemstone pips can imbalance a die. This is why even big time casinos use simple dice and not lux stuff even though all the tables are covered in felt and there’s lots of money sitting on them. I mean I get it. Dice made from expensive stuff like gemstones sounds really cool and is an idea that occurs to a lotta folks. It did to me. And when I saw the MDG dice on Drop, even though I knew there might be an issue with them from reading reviews, I bought a set. So, I get it. The reality just ends up being less cool. Handmade dice won’t roll true and glitzy dice will crack and chip. Resin is just better even though it has no prestige as a material. Best of luck if you want to try them anyway. Mine looked nice in the light, they just weren’t good dice. This guy will wait for something molded, and practical, less gamer bait and more gamer gear.
