I've been backpacking for over 10 years now, and this headlamp is by far the best one I've ever had! It has settings for every occasion Including dim, bright, and super-bright directed weight light (perfect for night hiking), one defused weight light (perfect for in camp use and night reading), dim, bright, and flashing red light (also perfect for in camp use and night reading), a lock mechanism so it doesn't accidentally turn on in your pack and waste battery, and finally the coolest feature, you don't have to carry extra AA's or AAA"s batteries because it rechargeable. For the price of less than $40 and the weight of 1.8 ounces this headlamp is worth it's weight in gold. The only downside to this product is that the head-band does not lock to your adjustment settings. So you're constantly fixing it, my solution to this is a small safety pin. I will put this item to the test during my 2019 Appalachian TrailThrough Hike! As of right now I give this product a 9.5 out of 10!

comat0se1Unfortunately I only managed to complete 270 miles of my Appalachian Trail flip-flop attempt through Maryland and Pennsylvania, with plans to do long sections hike In the upcoming years. However the light work perfectly!! When I remembered to lock the light it never came on in my pack, Additionally the battery life was really good I only charged it like two times during my 24 day trip, and the light quality was perfect for even the darkest of nights. I stand by my previous assessment and I absolutely love the light!!

The headband doesn’t stay on at all. But it earns 5 stars once you sew a few stitches into it to hold it in place. I really like the moolight Mode. Also has L to H operation. And return to low after power off. Bonus that it has a red light too.

I have 6+ years and probably over 5,000 miles of use with a Petzl TacTikka Plus and it is still going strong. But three things of this little Nitecore NU25 caused me to buy it and start using it:
  1. The dedicated red-light button
  2. The "low to high" instead of "high to low"
  3. Build-in battery, so no more having to carry dedicated batteries just for my headlamp
Overall I would say I am happy with this little Nitecore. The three feature that I was after in a new headlamp (those things listed above) have finally been meet, and that makes me happy. The only negative that I would attribute to the NU25 is that there are three levels of white, but only two levels of red. A slightly brighter, and thus third level, of red light would just make this a perfect 5-star headlamp. Is that me being nitpicky? No, I do not think so, because the second (max) level red light I do not find to be bright enough, or comparable to other lights, that have a red light, that is in this same category of headlamps. I do a fair bit of outdoor activities at night and having a decently bright red light is of some importance to me, and this little light, as much as I like it, just leaves me wanting in the bright-red-light department of things. But, this one issue aside, super neat and very likeable headlamp!

Excellent for backpacking and camping
Significant Positive Features/Functionality (ones beyond the obvious)
  • Once the battery gets below 10% the brightness dims. This is much preferable to other lights that simply go from bright to nothing once the battery power lowers to the point where the battery protection circuit shuts it off. You have ample visual warning (in excess of 1/2 hour) from when the battery gets low to when the light goes out. You won't be walking down a trail and suddenly, without warning, have no light.
  • Pressing and holding the red light switch will tell you the approximate charge remaining.
  • The light will operate while charging. There are numerous situations when this functionality is quite handy.
  • Obvious charging and fully charged indicator lights.
  • Light sequence is from low to high (vs. high to low) and the light can be turned off directly from any intensity level (i.e., without needing to cycle through all brightness levels to turn it off).
  • Separate white and red light buttons.
  • Great range of intensity levels and related battery life when considering how small and light of a unit. The intensity is more than adequate for backpacking and camping. (It's even adequate for trail running, although I personally prefer a larger/heavier and brighter unit for that activity.)
  • Very light and compact. It can easily be made even lighter and more than twice as compact by removing the head strap and replacing it with a thin stretch/elastic/shock cord.

Pretty good, with 1 fundamental flaw
I like the multiple light options. The build feels sturdy. The headband has a bit of a rubbery liner to create a bit of grip to stay in place. Here's the bummer - the Adjustable buckle is on backwards. This means the lump where the overlapped band flows thru the buckle is actually pressed against your head. the tighter the band, the more of a pressure point this creates. I'll either have to wear the band loosely (not ideal for activities) or wear it for short durations. I tried it on and tested it out a bit, and 10 mins later I can still feel the point on my head where the buckle was pressing in. I may attempt to flip the whole band around, but this will put the rubber grip strip on the outside and be of no use.

OldJoeClarkAnother viewpoint: I don't find this business with the strap and buckle to be an issue at all.

Great value in the Nitecore Series
I also own and regularly use the 1,000 lumen Nitecore headlamp, and while that far more expensive model sports an aluminum and water resistant housing, the biggest advantage I note it has over this 360-lumen model is the overhead strap on the headband. I tend to use this lower-power model more than the 1k due to it's reduced weight and the fact that it runs cooler. For most light-medium duty tasks in the dark, this will serve you well and wear comfortably while doing so.

Great headlamp! Smallest, lightest and brightest!
Love these headlamps. Best lightweight headlamp I found for good price. I replaced the headband with elastic cord. The lamp weighs 1.0 oz. But the headband weighs .9 oz.

This is all I use now
Like a lot of you, this is not my first headlamp. I have either had other models which all fall apart in a short amount of time or looked whistfully as very expensive models I don't want my kids losing. I now have 4 of these, one for each family member. The light is very bright, recharging via USB is insanely easier than batteries, and they are very small/compact. We use the red mode a lot at night. What I like most is at the price point while disheartening to lose one (hey, they are kids), I'm not insanely out of pocket. This is the only headlamp my family uses now, and we do a lot of camping.

Useless after a few months.
After this purchasing experience, I will likely never again buy from drop.com or recommend Nitecore as a brand. The unit was delivered October 16 and is now unusable. It does not charge correctly, and it dies so quickly I fear they replaced a good rechargable battery with one that has maybe 25 life cycles of use. This site is forever dead to me, and so is Nitecore. I'll spend more on LedLenser and be happy consistently.

flynhghrIs it possible you encountered a lemon or some sort of battery fault? I dont see any other reviews pointing out such an issue.

ccwhitneyIt might be a marketing spam. Even cheap chinese recycled batteries dont have 25 cycles and he clearly mentioned a rival site.

I was able to test the headlamp on a recent 3 day backpacking trip. The light performed great! It was easy to use and adjust the headband and angle of the light when wearing. The separate red and white light buttons were also a plus. The brightness levels levels of of the red and white light came in handy. I was able to increase the brightness of the red light so see where I was walking around camp without blinding everyone with the white light. It is lightweight and headband stayed in place even on the outside of a wool hat. Battery life has also been good based on my usage. I use the headlamps mostly for nighttime camp chores and short walks around camp.
