This thing rocks. Got to ski with it for the better part of the season and it's super versatile. Was thinner than I expected, but it is just the right weight as it turns out. Worked great under the motorcycle helmet too.
So the NxN hooded gaiter is AMAZING! Lite weight, breathable, versatile, and very easy to use. For being wool it's really soft, nice to the touch to skin.
This is now in my favorites of gear. The balaclava mod is genius. The merino is soft to the touch and like merino is odor resistant and handles a range of temperatures. This is a mid weight fabric. The only thing I would ask for is some more colors especially a muted dark red
I took it for a one week skiing trip. I wore it under my helmet. At 0 degrees Celsius it was perfect. When I was warm I would pull it under my chin, when I was cold I would pull it over my nose. It would unfeeze within seconds and keep me warm and protect from wind.
It doesn't feel itchy at all even though I am sensitive to that kind of stuff.
Fit was great, but after only a few wears the thing looked like it spent a year in a moth's next. It had more holes that swiss cheese. I tried contacted the company, emailed them twice asking if it could be a defect. I figured I might have just scored a dud, but no response. I have several other Merlino Wool Buffs from REI and never have I had this problem with the ones they were selling. But, I am not please with this, as it seems to have been a waste of money. The material felt great, but it didn't hold up, and the lack of response from the manufacturer really ticked me off.
I've used this a ton when outside in cold temps, or just as a neck and face shield on warmer days when out fishing all day. It breathes really well and is surprisingly warm for its weight.
This thing has been on my neck practically every day when I was out during the winter. It is a great piece of kit. Thin, light, comfortable and warm. The only thing I missed is a bit more length on the hood piece.
I was surprised at how thin it is, but it is super stretchy, configurable and surprisingly warm as base layer under other layers like hoodies and helmets.
