Is this some sort of Tai-Hao OEM job? They look exactly like Tai-Hao sets: same fonts, same keycap thickness, same way the double shot injection is done!
c_r_zLooks like Tai-Hao manufactured keycaps to me... as you mentioned, same legends, same thickness, same double shot molds. Not sure how these are higher quality, but if someone owns both please describe why these are higher quality over Tai-Hao sets without the nano-biosis coating. It would not surprise me if these are actually manufacturered by Tai-Hao.
They sell the originative carbon set on WASD keyboards for $55 right now... Really guys? I love you. But come on.
Edit: looks like others have noticed this also
We have spoken to Originative and they have decided to lower the MOQ on this drop to 50 to get these out - that way people can see the quality of the product once it ships.
They have also confirmed that:
1. Tai-Hao will be making these
2. There will be no anti-bacterial coating
YanboWuThanks for finally telling everyone who the vendor will be and that they will not be applying the antibacterial coating. If this PBT set is of comparable quality to the Originative Carbon Black ABS set, this should be quite okay. It is indeed difficult to find black PBT sets in OEM profile.
The vendor has just reached out to us about the group’s order and have informed us that there was a slight delay at the manufacturer. Currently the vendor expects the shipment to go out from their location from the beginning of March. The shipment may be delayed, but once we receive more concrete information from our supplier, we will update the group as soon as possible.
Expect an update from us by the end of the day Pacific Time on 3/1 or sooner if something comes up.
Because this is basic logistics. This is what you pay for, this is the service Massdrop provides. If you want ACTUAL group buys, I can arrange that and we can see how it works; this is just laziness on the part of a company that knows it has a captive audience. They are dealing with the same distributor/manufacturer over and over, and still can't nail down how long it takes to get x number of items delivered. It's disingenuous to call this a "group" buy. It insinuates things that simply aren't present here. I continue to buy things because it IS easier than dealing with actual group buys, and I hope someday that they are able to get it right. I'm honestly not sure the last time i was a part of an on-time drop. It seems there's always something. Recognizing that, and adjusting delivery dates out by some factor to account for what you can now almost predict to happen would set expectations up properly. Instead, we get absolute last-minute notifications that something happened and it'll be some more weeks before anyone knows anything else.
All it would take is communication with the vendor during the sale to say "looks like we'll have x orders, what is the timeframe on delivering that", followed by calls for weekly updates until the product is delivered. If we were on a forum somewhere, and this was group-buy #4 of the year, I could understand getting stiffed (repeatedly). This is a different story, and it simply feels like someone is taking the path of least resistance.
I suppose I would ask the same of Massdrop; if you can't get your vendor to deliver the product on time, why do you buy products through them?

Dude since you're such an expert and clearly a well known specialist in this field, why don't you work for MD and make sure that a contract you create with each vendor makes them liable for delays so that all "group buyers" receive refunds and free products, since that's kind of what you are getting at.
Hey MD, we found a new place to buy stuff from that delivers on time regardless of unforeseen problems.
It's called @lorsungcudelusionalworldofproducts.com. Bye Bye MD, I'm shopping at your competitor from now on.
Hello YanboWu,
any hint about the manufacturer appreciated. Would be nice to get a sneak peak about quality, thickness .. .
Not saying this might be essential information at all :)
Edit: Looked through the comments, these are Tai-Hao which is a no go.
If you like thin and uneven caps, buy it. That's all I have to say.
Still want MD to post the thicknesses anyways. Thanks.
So based on looking at these.
I get the impression the thickness is uneven on different sides.
And also not at the optimal of 1.5mm.
These look 1.25mm and less.
Can we get this verified please?
@YanboWu or @PeterK
BrainFlushIt's definitely not the super thick keycaps you like! I'll try to get some caliper readings on these soon.
We did get some additional drop points from Originative though!
YanboWuI appreciate the response.
I also think maybe it's a good time to finally include that kind of information right off the bat.
Especially when it comes to uneven sided caps and less than 1.5mm.
Just state it outright on the description page.
You won't lose sales since clearly people still buy these kinds of caps regardless.
But worst case scenario, people refuse to buy and you start to only carry higher quality caps, which in my eyes is the best thing you can do for both QA and CSR issues.
I'd actually prefer this was made by Tai-Hao and not Vortex. Using Vortex keycaps at the moment and I can feel/see the switches right through the keys. Not great. I don't mind the anti-bacterial coating on the Tai-Hao keys as much.
My only question is whether these keys are translucent enough to allow the LEDs from a non-backlit Pok3r through. It's difficult to tell from the pictures.
I'm referring to the LEDs for Caps Lock and Layer Modes. The Poker 3 Non-Backlit version still contains these LEDs. Attempting to use ABS keys mostly blocks the light from getting through, but slightly translucent PBT keys usually allow that light to go through. I'm wondering whether these particular keys are translucent enough to allow that much light to go through.
What exactly makes the Vortex keys better, if you don't mind me asking, besides the lack of anti-bac coating? The ones that came with my Poker 3 are really thin and sort of misshapen, and that turned me off of Vortex altogether :(
Originative is the biggest skank I've ever seen. I placed an order over 230 USD at their online store in November 2013. I complained about the unfulfilled status of my order in October 2014 and never got an answer to this complain. I recently logged in to their online store an saw that the status changed to fulfilled. However I never received any information about my order e.g. tracking number, neither did I received any packages from them. At the end of the story I lost 230 USD to the untrustiest online store I've ever dealt with so far. I hope you guys will be luckier with this groupbuy.
tobiassorry about the inconvenience we have caused. We will send you an e-mail. Please do provide us with your PayPal, and we will gift it! Sorry again for any troubles we have caused you in the past.
tobias230-45(as long as it hits moq) So now you're only out $185. I guess it's nice they are at least trying to make it right and that does say something. Good luck.
