Can someone explain to me what the meaning behind this is? What's the point of having a potato key? This seems like one of those unnecessarily goofy things that really has zero purpose. Plus it's a horrible looking potato as well...already turning bad like wtf seriously?

scott.vater.9The point is to have a key that looks like a potato. It is not that complicated.
Ultimately it is for the same reason you buy much of anything, you like it, it makes you happy.
The small sprouts make it more distinct and potatoy. So as to make sure no one thinks you have a strange brown oval on your keyboard, because that would be ridiculous.

GneissWell, duh, I just didn't know if it was some meme going around or some reference to something. So hard to keep up with stuff like that nowadays.

scott.vater.9It's novelty. Custom novelty MX keycaps sell for a lot more than this, especially ones made of metal (I've seen some ironman keycaps go for $100!).

scott.vater.9It is, yeah. Some PC gamers have been referring to consoles as potatoes, perhaps spearheaded by the PC Master Race subreddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/). I think that's a riff on YouTube comments about a video being "filmed with a potato" when it's a low-res, low-quality video.

scott.vater.9tl,dr as I understand it is that Massdrop sometimes edits unfeasible/ridiculous poll options to "potato", "brick", etc. and then everyone votes for that because it's funny.
