Love this little desktop DAC/headphone amp. Easy to setup and connect to separate SMSL amp to power desktop speakers. Really like the ability to have separate speaker and headphone volume control. Easy to switch between inputs and output source while keeping my headphones plugged in. Buttons and knobs have a good feel to them and don't come across as cheap. Mostly paired with Beyerdynamic DT 770 80 ohm. This unit provides more than enough power for my headphone lineup. A+ for the on sale price.
Although inherently limited by its lack of inputs, if you've got the proper S/PDIF connections to make it work this amp has fantastic value. I have no real complaints beyond the connectivity, and for only 35$ on sale here it was more than worth the price. Although I've since upgraded I still don't regret the purchase.
This SMSL SD-793II DAC/AMP outputs enough power to drive my high impedance headphones and there is minimal distortion when turned up to high volumes. DACs aren't supposed to alter the headphone sound, which I am pleasantly surprised to report with this extremely cheap DAC/AMP. I highly recommend this to any other budget HiFI enthusiasts.
I mostly got this for a cheap dac with optical in for my tv but the amp isn't half bad!
So I have mine running into a Topping L30 which I wanted to do a Topping Stack but this fit my budget better for now but I'm pleasantly pleased, before I was using a ghetto amazon optical in dac thing and I would have to max my L30 most of the time to run my HD6xx's but with the smsl added on I don't even go half way any more! Plus like I said in the title the amp built in actually runs my HD6xxs just fine which I'm shocked, tho I do have to run it nearly maxed out but it sounds good and actually has a little punch to it. If you can get this for what j got it for 32-35 then it is beyond a bargain!
*EDIT* July 10 2022, I AM STILL USING THIS AS MY MAIN DAC. I bought ifi zen dac v2 which I'll use on my laptop but I cannot use it on my tv/ps5. The akm chip in the smsl is far superior. While the amp is not, but if you use it as just a dac to another amp the sound to my ears is better. I added a couple tube amps to my stack. Loxjie p20 and the cavalli tube hybrid. Now the zen dac v2 is definitely not bad and would be a major upgrade to most standard machines but in comparison of what I already had hooked up it closed in the sound stage and the audio literally wasn't as clear. I was shocked that ifi zen dac had the reviews that it does because it is very obvious if you have tried other dacs and amps. I ordered a balanced smsl dac SU8s from drop a week or so ago but still doesn't ship for a month. The zen dac was supposed to be my balanced upgrade but I think the smsl su8s is going to fit what I want. While it is dac only that is fine and I'm going to take this old smsl dac amp and put it in my living room. Going to sell the ifi zen dac v2 and get a different usb dac. The su8s is usb but I'm going to be running it on my bedroom TV not My PC, I'm excited it adds Bluetooth to my stack.
My point is to not sleep on SMSL, and even Topping are very 2 good Chi Fi companies
While I'm sure there's more expensive DAC and Amps that give better sound quality, for the price, this was an absolute bargain. I've had it hooked up to my PC through a Toslink cable for a month now, and sound quality has improved, as well as cutting down on idle "hiss" through my headphones. The downside is that the amp is powerful enough that for low-impedance headphones, I end up having the volume really low.
