Mark_MQuick caveat, the DROP amps extend like 1.5 inch deeper than the D70. So it will hit the BT antenna if you have it pointed up. I actually have my setup with the AMP pushed more forward to make room for it. You can go as flush as in the image shown by OP if you get the non-BT version or point the antennae sideways.
legaceezIs it worth it to splurge for the bluetooth option? It would be an extra $70 Canadian. I've also been considering the SMSL SU-8 which is $150 less.
Mark_MIt really depends on your needs. If you use a mobile device to stream a lot then yea it's worth it.
For me, I barely used it as if I'm using the DAC I'm already sitting at my desk with the my computer feeding into it. I rarely connect my phone or something else as an input but it was more of a nice to have in case my set up ever changes.
Mark_MYour have to connect it to a 3rd party BT receiver. The D70 Bluetooth edition has an extra old school analog looking coax input for the antenna so you wouldn't be able to just get that separatly and plug it in.
Mark_MYup a 3rd party one would have to use one of the available inputs. What I meant to say, if there was any confusion, is the BT edition has a dedicated port so it doesn't take up one of the other available ports.
I'm guessing you'd need the USB one for your PC but that should leave at least the optical, coax, etc free.
legaceezYeah true. In any case it seems I can get the D70 on Amazon Canada for about the same price as buying here + customs fees. Also I would receive it a lot sooner.
Mark_MI think it's worth the extra $70 easy.
I already have a Sonos system which can play my phones files but if I didn't I would be looking at some kind of wireless streaming system.
It adds so much more functionality being able to play music remote with your phone and being able to remotely switch albums, increase volume etc or play a guest's music. That is a whole lot more ability for the money.
Mendy770Running the exact same setup! D70 --> AAA789 --> HD6XX balanced. Using an Allo Digione Signature as a SPDIF source and running LMS on its Volumio based Raspberry Pi system.
Very musical, clean and satisfying.
Can't wait to test out the setup with the LCD-2C (on order).
fast_and_furiousNice!!!
i don’t know if I mentioned but Im also running balanced for my 6XX and boy does it sound delicious 😋
and yes, LMK how the lcd 2-c sounds with the rig.
fast_and_furiousI also bought a set of LCD-2C (used) and have the D70 and THX789. I'm waiting for the LCD-2C to arrive. In the meantime I have the 6XX and 58X. Are you running your D70 in DAC only mode or do you adjust the volume via the D70. If it's the latter then where have you set the volume on the 789?
Mendy770Yes I know that. But I want to use the remote cause when I'm lounging in my chair the amp/dac stack is a bit out of reach. I just don't want to somehow ruin how it's supposed to sound. Right now I have the 789 volume at max on medium gain. Then I adjust the volume on the D70 and I'm listening at around -32dB volume.
Mark_MThe experts suggest that setting the D70 to the dedicated DAC mode enables it to deliver the best possible output, so I'm following that. Volume on the 789 depends on what it drives. For IEMs: low gain and volume knob between 8 and 10 o' clock, for 6XX: medium gain and between 9 and 1 o' clock.
fast_and_furiousHmm okay. Well that basically makes the remote useless. If I put the 789 at med gain between 9 and 1 than the volume on the D70 will be higher. Who are these “experts”?
Mark_MHaha "audiophiles"! :-P
Jokes apart, I found this on several hi-fi forums. They say that the volume control functionality was added by Topping for the D70 to be used as a pre-amp. Apparently people use it with powered monitors, where the remote control helps with volume adjustments.
Mark_MIf you do use the pre-amp feature I would just always set it to max (00.0db) and use your actual amp to control volume.
Only time I would use less volume is if you need more room for adjustment with sensitive IEM's or headphones or you are feeding to speakers with no volume control. Barring this I would just turn the pre-amp feature off to begin with.
legaceezHmm okay. Well that seems to make the remote useless. I don’t have my setup at a desk. It’s on a side table beside my recliner as I just have a laptop with my Amp and DAC.
Mark_MIf it's convenient for you to use the remote because of a setup where your AMP volume knob isn't easily reached then that probably trumps my suggestion.
But yea barring that I would just think of the remote as a nice to have. I actually only use mines to change settings that you normally can't without it.
HaVoCTzuHow about realizing they aren't shitty products and there are tiers of things. It's pretty well accepted that the 6xx and 789 are some of the best in their class/price range...yup I was right a sad attempt at being elitist...
I'm sure your personal opinion trumps all though because you have golden ears it seems like. Good for you mate enjoy lol
