Made from three layers of forged steel, these kitchen knives are tough as nails. The core is made from VG-10: a high-carbon content steel from Japan Read More
Steel coming out of China deserves to be treated with suspicion. I love massdrop, but when it comes to knives I’ll stick with German Steel. Even Japanese foundaries have been found to falsify steel qualities.
MikeyjI can see the sales pitch now: "German knife steel, reliably mediocre!"
I think in the end you have to pick your manufacturer and then trust in them to know whether the steel they're using is up to scratch or not. I do agree though that a good dose of suspicion is pretty much essential these days, no matter where things come from, with perhaps extra helpings of it where Chinese manufacturing is involved.
DeadWadeWThe chef's knife is back, but I suspect the Santoku might be gone for good. It's been missing from the last 3 drops now and they've removed almost all mention of it from the drop description.
How well made are these, I'm looking for a good all rounder and a heavy duty cleaver, but I'm having trouble deciding whether to get the Zhen Santoku & a 8 inch Cleaver here or just get the Kanemoto VG-10 from the other drop.
droopThanks, I've decided to get this set, since this is my first time buying good knives, I'll start small I guess, I've read the reviews, MD seems to have the best price anywhere so I'mma get them while I can
Did that a couple weeks ago, except the knife landed right next to my foot, stuck into the floor like I’d thrown it at it. I shiver when I think of it landing an inch to the left. Hope your wife is ok.
craigcBased on the weights listed here, and comparing with descriptions of the knives on Amazon:
The 6.5-inch Cleaver and 7-inch Veggie Knife should have thinner and lighter, 1.8mm thick blades.
The 6.5-inch 'Bone Chopper' Cleaver, and both of the 8-inch Cleavers should have thicker and heavier, 3.5mm thick blades.
Zhen also make a thinner 1.8mm version of the 8-inch cleaver, but it's not available as part of this drop. Which is perhaps a pity since one of the reviews for it states "It's my only knife that I feel safe using to chop up large rutabagas. I can safely pound the cleaver through a large rutabaga while keeping my fingers far away from the cutting edge".
From what I've read you're probably better off with a thinner blade for rutabagas, thicker blades are more inclined to wedge and jam.
Of course it's not personal haha
But Amazon ships the same knifes times Israel (more expensive) and I've already bought some knives on MD...
All the knives on "kitchen knives week" don't ship to Israel sadly
Yuval28I'm guessing they don't want to deal with too many obstacles and customs from some countries when they expect a larger order of sensitive goods, and also it depends on the seller as well I guess
