Product Description
Named after Prohibition-era mob boss and Al Capone’s mentor, John “The Fox” Torrio, the Ashland Leather Johnny the Fox Bifold embodies the hard-as-nails spirit of Chicago’s toughest gangster—which makes sense, since Ashland Leather hails from the Windy City. The bifold’s rugged design is constructed from quality Horween leather that gracefully ages into a patina that reflects its owner’s personal use Read More

How come there's no black outer shell in this drop?
We do not have any current plans to do a Tony drop in shell but I will work on this!

Really, you name this thing after that schmuck? Is this really what being a millennial means - you're such a weenie that you overcompensate by idolizing mobsters?

ladlesteinNo, technically, it means the generational demographic following Generation X.
Personally, I like how they have a whole Chicago theme going for their product; it shows a love for their hometown and pride in their materials. The idea is also to denote the toughness of their products, and while mob guys may not be the most positive, they're pretty striking and have had a serious impact in the U.S.
But hey, you're free to feel how you want about things, there might still be Chester Mox compact bifolds in the bazaar, if you're still put off by Ashland's offering.

ladlesteinEvery body wants be a gangster these days, this place encourages that behaviour with tacticool knives, gangster wallets, lock picking kits, drug paraphernalia etc it's no wonder md sees more than the average number of f#kwits here!

Maybe this is another example of the "Is the dress blue & black or white & gold" optical illusion. Because in the 4th and 5th photos it really looks like it's black with a blue interior for the bill pocket.

Going back and looking at it again I could see it being all black and the blue just being a trick of the lighting.
Either way I'm in for one of the Black Dublins, although I don't know enough about leather to know if/why Dublin is worth the extra $15 over the CXL. I'd be very interested if anyone could expand on this.

I had the same questions and if you google you will find detailed explanations. Basically, the Dublin gets the same tanning process as Shell Cordovan, but using cow or horse hide instead of the horse sinew that defines Shell Cordovan. CXL leather is tanned using a chromium process, and supposedly has more of a semigloss appearance whereas Dublin is supposedly more matte.
For small leather goods I highly prefer the Dublin as, in my experience, it ages much nicer in the pocket. The grain is much more pronounced on the Dublin and the Chromexcel is a much more smooth grain characteristic. Both Dublin and Chromexcel will have the nice depth of color that is called "pull up". The feel is more waxy on the Dublin and oily on Chromexcel. You can't go wrong with either to be honest. They are both about the nicest leather you can get.

Finally got it(the Essex version) today,to be frank it is not as good as i thought, but I do think it is still well worth the price.I had spent money on a wallet that is a bit more expensive than this but it has fiber for filling(not all real leather,2 pieces of thin leather with fiber in the middle).
The main complain I have about this is that the color is not very consistent ,on the outside it is good but on the inside it is not as good.
And the edges are not sealed, but i fixed that with some mink oil.I also think the color problem can also be fixed with oil and use but that will take some time,i will try to update if I can remember.

+1 for Shell Cordovan Foxes. I already have two CXL Foxes and I love them (one bought directly from you some years ago and a backup one ordered via Massdrop). I don't really care about whether there is a price advantage, but Massdrop does a good job regarding customs delarations so I don't have to go to the customs office here in Germany (which I don't really enjoy doing - quite the opposite).
One of the things I love most about the CXL Fox (besides the great materials and craftmanship) is that it's so damn slim. How are the Shell Cordovan ones compared to CXL Foxes regarding slimness?
mabeI really appreciate your support from Germany! Thanks so much. The thickness varies more on the Shell Cordovan and can range from slightly thicker than the CXL we use for Foxes to slightly thinner. The big difference is in the temper (firm or softness) of the leather. The Chromexcel tends to be softer and more flexible out of the box where the shell takes a couple weeks of breaking in. I have noticed that many people perceive a firmer leather to be more thick where this is not really the case...I think our brains play a trick on us.

As nice as these wallets are (mine was buttery smooth Chromexcel), Phil Kalas' customer service is even better. I had a small irregularity in my Johnny the Fox bifold so I contacted Phil and pointed out the flaw. Really with no questions asked, he immediately paid for shipping so I could send it back to him. And then he shipped me a brand new one. Ashland understands customer service. I feel like Phil went out of his way to make sure I had a great experience with his product. That kind of customer service is hard to find these days. I HIGHLY recommend buying from Ashland leather: a terrific product and 5 star customer service. Worth every penny.

I wish if Ashland can use a little thicker thread? As my shell cordovan of Johnny the fox wallet has one part of thread popped after 2 weeks, its the inside, left half of the wallet at lower corner where the edge of the hidden pocket opening that is stitched down with the exterior, I didn't want to send its back to repair just yet as first I'm located in canada and 2nd it isn't a big issue, the wallet doesn't falls apart from that and I hold the thread down using clear nail polish. Just hopefully the rest of the tread will never pop.
Michael_CHi, Michael! All of my wallets are guaranteed forever so if you do want to send it back I will fix it or replace it at no charge. If there is a loose thread end that does not look structural, you can trim it off and burn off the excess to clean it up.

ashlandleatherThank for your reply, and I love my shell wallet so much that I didn't want to send it back for such minor issue, and I don't want it to leave from me for couple of weeks. I'm in for the Chromexcel version of this wallet, so in the future if my shell one needs repair, I have this one for backup. :)

What's the difference between the black Horween Chromexcel and the black Dublin? The pictures look the same.
Tz2000Super awesome question. The biggest difference is that Horween Chromexcel has a smoother, more polished grain where the Dublin has a very intense grain character. The Chromexcel has a softer handfeel where the Dublin has "veggy bite" (yeah I made up that term) when you hold the wallet. What I mean by "veggy bite" is that it feels like a firmer vegetable tanned leather and has an interesting supple firmness to it. The Dublin is also finished with a hard wax on the surface which creates a brighter luster and a slightly more grey color. Hope this helps!

TamPrsI can personally confirm that you can use one slot for multiple cards, although generally I'd say the second card should be slimmer than the normal credit card type things. If you have that then it's not much different than just a single card.
