Old meets new in the CAD M179 condenser mic, which combines a vintage capsule design with modern electronics to produce an open, natural sound. It uses the dual-diaphragm version of the company’s well-regarded E300 capsule—an externally biased capsule with a gold-sputtered 1.1-inch diaphragm—and delivers a high output level and fast transient response with low noise and low distortion. Equipped with a continuously variable pickup pattern selection and a switchable high-pass filter and -20dB pad, the M179 is particularly well suited for use with drums. Members of the Gearslutz community rave about using the mic for this purpose, and Zen Pro Audio’s Warren Dent calls it “one of the few mics I’d be willing to put anywhere on a drum kit… period.”
