I think that's the novelty of it, it's limited and different. You interact with your samples and your field recorder doubles as an instrument. It's kinda like buying gear to make music instead of using your computer/daw, you can make music with your computer, it's just not as fun to do it.

Probably going to look like an idiot with this post, but I'd rather seem foolish, indulge curiosity and perhaps learn something from it than just close thus page and stay in the dark, so asking anyway.
How does something like this vary from just using a normal field recorder like the H4n then messing with sounds in your Desktop Audio Workstation software? And how is that difference advantageous enough to justify a $300usd MSRP as an audio tool rather than just a toy?

Yeah, I'd really like to be able to monitor (using the output) while recording so I know when to stop recording.

zfigzSo the Kaleidoloop is sitting on my desk and I have been exploring just how cool this beast is. You cannot however, monitor what it is recording, you can only listen to it in playback. But it is simple to use, the recording quality is fairly decent; based upon the onboard speaker's playback quality. I even plugged a pair of headphones into it. You can listen to playback via headphones, however, the output is mono.
I will post a best review after i find the time to really get into it. Thanks again for all your excitement and enthusiasm.

@seanreid do you have any idea if the Kaleidoloop can monitor the audio signal it's recording?

zfigzI believe not, the microphone would pick up the monitoring coming from the on-board speaker. However, there is a 1/4" output jack, perhaps you could monitor through that?
To be honest I do not know, but I will play with it tomorrow if I can and get back to you once I do a little research.

I've owned a monomachine (MnM) since 2007 and it's kinda been the workhorse for everything else. Also, I recently replaced a SP606 with an Analog Rytm (AR). So those are the meat my setup (harmonic+percussive), but I also have the following in the mix...
Blofeld goes through the Biscuit for adding a bit more grit/warmth, then through the AR (no more inputs on mixer), and both of those are controlled via the MnM .
Tetra goes through the Space and both are also controlled via the MnM.
MnM goes to the Deco to shave some of the shrill highs of the MnM's digital character and also add extreme tape effects for some fun pitch action.
AR is fairly new to my setup, but it's main focus are drums and one shot sound fx.
Everything is piped through a small mixer that then goes to a RMS755 Stereo Compressor and then to a hardware sound recorder (DA3000) to be backed up to SD card for later listening.
As for the Kaleidoloop, I plan on using my vocal processor (symetrix 528e) to pipe the audio from whatever source (mic/line input) to the the Kaleido. Then, I'll play my collected sounds from the Kaleidoloop through to the MnM for further processing. I'll primarily use the Kaleidoloop for long field recordings, voice stuff, and transitions between songs.
I'd love to buy a Kaleidoloop now, but being a teacher with a family, that's difficult with the $300 price tag (recent gear has been purchased with a 2nd job working valet on the weekend). So interested people out there, come on down and join the drop to help me help you bring the price down :o)

zfigzAbsolutely sick setup! And the red crushed velvet in the case just puts it over the top.
Would love to be able to get some polls started on some of these pieces, I think the community would benefit from more peripherals like these. I know there are some polls already, we just need some more love thrown their way. Thanks for sharing and for all your excitement about the drop.

zfigzYour enthusiasm is exactly why we do what we do!
Thanks for sharing the picture and if you could, tell us a little more about your setup. I can't quite make out everything you have there.
Thanks.

Wanted to share this great little video on Critter and Guitari. Tells who they are, what they do and why they do it, this is just a unique and interesting company. They are making amazing devices and synths, true analog with the novice and professional musician in mind.
Watch and enjoy!
