The best way to practice lockpicking is by learning how locks work. This cutaway padlock gives you a full view of what’s going on inside when you turn the dial and open and close the lock Read More
The cost of making this item is higher than you might think, when time and labor is factored in (as it must be in all cases). Cutting and assembling, using our mill and laser as well as two plus hours of hand work, is expensive partly due to a fairly high waste factor (milling the stainless steel back off cleanly, without damaging the internal parts which are packed in very close to the metal being cut off, is delicate and about 3 out of 10 padlocks end up in the garbage). It’s like art more than machine shop work – the cost of raw materials is almost inconsequential due to the labor-intensive nature. Therefore, the resulting product, in design and function, is either something you relate to and find to be worth the price, or it isn’t. For those who aren’t interested or excited by the concept it represents, the price will seem ridiculously high, while others will find it a good buy. Simple as that. I honestly don’t think the issue is worth all this rancor.
I'd have to agree with both sides of opinion. The labour and exclusiveness (no one else is offering this, regardless of whether they could or not) justifies a price higher than the $11 price of the padlock itself. Having said that, the wholesale cost of the padlocks for the manufacturer + labour costs (only IMHO) would be a reasonable $45 USD at most.
Finally, it is available on Amazon for $64.95 + $6.65 shipping, which is lower than the lowest price on this drop. This drop does ship to more locations, though.
censtad$85 worth of effort? These locks cost next to nothing, wholesale. Milling off the back plate and adding a plastic back isn't worth $85 or anywhere close.
And for what end? if you're interested in learning how radial combo padlocks work, buy one for a buck and pop it open.
If you want a status symbol to sit on your desk, look elsewhere. Nobody is going to be able tell that you wasted $72 on this crappy padlock. This is almost like the "leather rock pouch" thing, sold on Nordstrom's website that went viral a while back. The only difference is that this has much less value, in terms of "conceptual artwork."
Again, this product is ridiculous; in terms of both utility and as a status indicator. I can't imagine the lonely souls who are throwing $85 (or $72) at this garbage.
For whom is this product intended? What's the demographic for this product? Who's buying this crap?
Ridiculous hahaha! $85 for a $2 padlock??? If people actually buy, then this is an amazingly profitable business. I'm heading to Home Depot right now to buy all their padlocks. Anyone want one? I'm selling them for the low low price of only $35! That's over half off the price of this drop! Limited time offer!
FYI from the seller of this product: This is a unique item that has proven to be one of our most popular creations. The back has been milled off and replaced with a transparent acrylic back plate with all the “guts” of the lock mechanism transferred to it. We’ve gone a step further by creating an effective attachment system that allows the user to completely disassemble all the components of the lock and put them back together, needing only a Phillips screwdriver. It makes an unbeatable gift for people who love puzzles and are intrigued by how things work, as well as being an educational visual aid for hobbyists and locksmith students. This “dismantleable” padlock cannot be found in stores and we are the sole supplier for the 2 or 3 internet sites that are currently offering it.
