It’s been a keycap-filled decade here on Drop. When we started this business of group buys, we had no idea how involved we’d get in the Mech Keys community—and how much the community would give back to us Read More

Hello fellow Keyboard Mystery Boxers!
We were overwhelmed with interest from our first Keycap Mystery Box and have just finished shipping everything out. We've been reading the feedback, working on making improvements, and getting setup for a follow up to the very popular program. Here are some details about the next series of boxes that can help you decide if a "Series 2" box is the right thing for you:
1. The value included in the boxes still has an MSRP > $200. They're designed in the same way as the last boxes but the value of will have lower variance between different boxes (see the next point for why).
2. We've standardized the algorithm to pick from different categories of products. Boxes will now include one "expensive" MT3/GMK/SA/DCX kit, two less expensive base kits (Skylight, Keysterine, Artifact, etc.) and an Artisan/novelty/specialty keycap. (note A)
3. In the last run we had multiple people receive "duplicate" boxes. The reason for this is because we had 15 different set box designs, and we had over 100 people order two boxes. With 15 different designs, there was a ~7% chance that you'd get a duplicate box if you ordered two. With that many people ordering multiple boxes, it was natural to have quite a few people get duplicate boxes. (We honestly didn't expect so many people to order multiple boxes).
The new system has far more variety with 50+ box designs making it far less likely (but not impossible) to get the same box twice. (note B)
4. We've removed supplemental kits from boxes (unless they have an accompanying base kit). That means you won't get something like a set of MT3 Cyber accents (unless the box also contains MT3 Cyber Base).
5. These kits take a considerable amount of time to compile, package, and ship, so we'll be limiting the Series 2 run to 500 boxes. If there's enough interest, we'll expand the offering but we'll likely have to push the ship date back for subsequent sales (which is what we did with Series 1).
6. As you can see, we're running Series 2 of the Keycap Mystery Box on a separate page to keep the information and communications concise. If you want to read reviews and discussion about the first edition of the box, please go to the prior listing page.
Notes
A - Some reviews suggest that non-premium keycap sets are "useless filler". This is far from reality. Although they may not be premium $100+ keycap sets, they're still high quality keycaps that are loved by the thousands of people who have purchased them. If you see no use for these keycaps, you should probably stay away from these boxes).
B - We've added considerably more randomization to our algorithm to accommodate multiple box purchasers. For those who purchased multiple boxes and got duplicates, please contact customer service and we’ll set you up with a free replacement box out of the Series 2 kits.
edit: formatting.
Update: We're almost sold out. We will work on getting more, but if you're looking to grab one you might want to be quick.
2nd update: we increased the quantity already but the second batch is almost out as well. Thank you everyone who've joined the Mystery Box fun already!
3rd update: last batch now available. 300 boxes left and that’s it.
Why are these live again? I didn’t see an announcement or anything. Does the purchase cap still apply (e.g. if I bought two last time series 2 was up can I buy more this time)?
gargantuanmanThere was a R1 of the box a month or two ago, so most likely it is that set that they're selling (I'm not sure if Drop did mystery keycaps before this, correct me if I'm wrong)
I'm wasn't trying to get into the math of it, but I've already done a year and decided it wasn't worth it. The gist of it is that it costs ~$250 and two months to break even (at least $100 per transaction a month + $50 annual fee). Then the membership coupon doesn't stack with any promotions that are discounted via a dedicated coupon, which limits the actual value of coupon itself.
I also did not feel like I benefited from any of the other perks such as a few days early access of various launches or promotion. For example, it doesn't even sound like Keyclub members got any early access for these Mystery Boxes even though they are limited in quantity.
Anyways, I didn't mean for this to be a review of the club. I'm sure others are happy with it. I'm not, so I canceled.
LulunaNo worries at all, happy to hear the feedback. I admit we should do better with early access and some of the other perks - which we will! Once we are there (very soon I hope), hopefully it would be worth reconsidering.

Yeah this is the last straw, I am deleting my account if possible and never using this site again
kouki.monsterNot a single one, at least in the last run no one got anything like that.

kouki.monsterThey've said there won't ever be any older sets in these. During the last run, it was almost always a Skylight or Artifact Bloom set, paired with a full or partial MT3, SA, or GMK set that's already currently being sold on the site.
I'm a bit baffled by the criticality. I mean, literally no one is forcing you to spend $100 (or if you're a key club member only $80). Drop seems to be doing just fine, so it feels pretty clearly like a thank you to me. There's a lot of super mindless marketing strategies out there and this seems in perfect alignment with a community of folks who basically LIVE (I can only speak for myself but call it an educated guess that I'm not alone) for a good unboxing.
And I have to uplift the value of getting things you may not at first, think you like. It's not like you're getting anything that isn't high quality, regardless of whether it's a 'premium' set or not. You gotta appreciate the sheer labor that goes into the process too. Haters gonna...and all that, but even if it's warehouse clearing (which, c'mon, some of it is sure, but probably not even most of it), as there are much less imaginative and more efficient ways to drop boxes. Sorry, I couldn't help myself there at the end.
If you can't sell a keycap set lower the prize until you can!
You are tricking people into buying something they don't need or want!
And on top you marketing this as thank you gift to the community?
This is foul!
NivaI just wanted to come back and say that I'm quite happy with the sets I received. I actually got three sets I was already considering for future builds. The best one was the GMK Pixel set though. Definitely glad I picked this up.
Remember: these are sets that they can't sell that they want to get out of their warehouse. They could just discount a set to $99 and tell you what you're getting, but they're not. If you have no aesthetic preference, and just need any keycap set, go wild, but the odds of you getting a set that you don't care about and will not love using is very high.

leebenningfieldI get that they need to offload old stock, but yeah, why not just do a deep discount or a BOGO sale or something instead? I feel like these mystery sales are only hurting Drop, because many people are going to inevitably be disappointed with what they get, and then come here to complain. If you look at the reviews from last time, they aren't exactly stellar. A regular old clearance sale would generate far more goodwill.
