To all who claimed this is an "unbelievable" deal, apparently it is nowhere near real SP200 and gets driven into clipping quite easily, resulting in this mess. So buyer beware, I hope you don't need it near max power because it will sound bad.
Thanks for the link and getting that shaft size so quickly. Most 6mm knobs should fit then. Seems like the knob you chose is probably max size you can fit on it. Very nice upgrade. I hate tinny, flimsy knobs with poor location indicators or non at all. 👍
THX/SP200 clone or not, makes absolutely no difference on my purchase decision. Based on specs and ability to opamp rolling, it’s a sound purchase for budget minded individual. I don’t expect it to rival my 2K tube amp. But as far as SolidState amps go, it should satisfy most headphone enthusiast. And for ridiculous $159, this might be the best deal of 2020. It might be possible to get some positive sonic benefits by swapping Op-amps for something more exotic like Burson Audio Supreme Sound opamp V5i (Drop should try to get those at discounted price BTW) but that’s very subjective as we all perceive “musicality”/accuracy differently.
PS
Dear DROP, pls try to source out quality opamps for our tweaking pleasure. It would be greatly appreciated. 👍
Impressive specs for such a tiny amp. Preamp and extra low gain setting is definitely a plus for IEM users (I’m not into IEMs myself). If those features + power in small package is what you need then perhaps it might be reasonable to wait and get that little wonder. AM01 suits me a little better with wide headphone output connection choices and both single-ended and XLR ins. It will let me use my Dragon Inspire IHA1 as a tube preamp on occasion for a bit of color and my hi-end dac via balanced ins. So it comes down to what you really want and how you gonna use it I guess. Certainly there will be something “better”, cleaner, more powerful etc next year but for now, it’s good enough. At least for what I personally, need it for. And it’s only $159! Some pay that much for silly cable “upgrade”. 🤣👍
Can anyone who has experience with the SP200 comment on the gain settings of this amp since they are the same as the SP200. I remember reading some comments on the SP200 saying there was some noise on low gain with sensitive phones and iems and not much usable range on the volume control and too much gain on the high gain setting. Both amps are speced at +6dB on low gain and +18dB on high gain.
dpumpHere is a link to the SP200 measurements on ASR: https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/review-and-measurements-of-smsl-sp200-thx-hp-amp.9242/
I have used some fairly sensitive iems (16ohm 98bd) with my SP200 and haven’t noticed any noise. Measurements showed it has a SNR of around 83db when at a very low 50mv output.
I do typically reduce the output level from my DAC so that I can use more range of the volume pot on the amp. If I were to do full volume out of the DAC, I’d be extremely uncomfortable before I could get 3/4 of the way on low gain, even with HD6XXs. I mention this to give you an idea of the power output.
Without seeing any third party measurements on this particular model, it would be hard to say how well it would work with high sensitivity / low impedance IEMs.
dpumpIn my focal elex there’s nothing but a dark background meaning zero noise on low gain & high gain isn’t necessary since the amp is already a monster
DeweyCheatemNHoweIf this is indeed a clone of the SP200, it has exactly the same output power regardless of the connection. It has enough power and such low crosstalk that being truly balanced would make zero audible difference.
