Product Description
A rare find for the pen collector who appreciates fine Italian craftsmanship, the Grifos Mandragola takes its name from the mandrake, a popular symbol in folklore believed to bring good fortune and cure a variety of ailments. The pen is available in three striking styles, each featuring bevel-patterned sterling silver and richly colored olive or briar wood Read More
Unfortunately the figuring on the wood was nowhere close to the pictures. I have another all silver Grifos just with a gold stub nib and that is a pretty good pen. The nib on this pen in steel is so over polished it didn’t run out of the box at all. I had to bend the nib to put the over polished “V” on the top of the nib. It will run now but I’m not impressed. I’d be better off pulling this nib and throwing in a spare Jinhao. At least those are consistent. Also the wood will stain if you get ink on it at all. Had a small dot of Caran D’ache hypnotic turquoise on my finger from working the nib. Went to test and left a stain in the wood somehow. Be careful of that.
This is a beautiful pen. I have the silver barrel with olive wood cap version. My only minor complaint is that the logo on the cap band is not centered under the pocket clip. Otherwise, it has a great balance and writes very well. It is also of a form and quality that speak of Italian design.

This was bought as a gift for my daughter who has a high pressure university job. She was delighted with the appearance in the first place but also reprts that it writes beautifully with even ink flow and no blobbing
Love the aesthetics (the wood as well as the silver work are great) and the pen flows well.
At certain angles, I get some hard stops, but I learn what to expect from the nib and the sweet spots after habitual usage.
I got what I wanted/expected from this pen.
I own more than 10 fountain pens, and this is the only one with issues making it unusable. Ink is drained in one day as it leaks into the cap when not in use. Ironically, it will not flow when I actually use it to write. It just seats in my drawer now and pretty much a trash at this point. To me, how it looks leaves much to be desired. It looks like cheaply constructed and low quality material pen to me personally. Everyone has different value when it comes to aesthetics of a product, it just looks poor to my tastes.
Sorry again you have the right to contact the customer service of MD or in straight way me since you have payed money for it. Of this pen only we have sold more then 300 pcs on MD one, and some thousands if we count all the marketplaces where we have put it on sale. If there were any complains for production mishap can happen since is statistical and the unhappy people are the one that always write post while most part of satisfied customers often and simply do not write nothing. Pretty nobody write anymore positive nowaday where too many feedbacks for all we purchase over internet are request. So no news if some unhappy customers rightly write his post but what is "new" is that it is wrote before any claim or request. On this your pen we use German Bock feeder and nib and we use it an pretty all our pens (so I mean some thousands pens every year from 2003) sure they too have on production some defect but again this is statistic in every production and are from these small number that the complain came. I do not blaim the complain since you are right and have the right to do it. What I complain is your generalization that does not take into account (again) the statistics and the thousands of pens produced and that you do not value us through the assistance that Massdrop and we personally offer. Why so we must have Customer Care service if then customer prefer not use it and keep their useless things? We are not "all the same" and there is people and companies which spend time in answer customers needs and generalize do not help you nor us not the whole e-commerce. I answered you every time immediately even on Sunday trying to take care of your problem but in answer we get only summary judgement. Is a pity and a failure for all of us who take care of customer. So are right the companies who only show fake and empty customer services since they understood that customers not need of real problem fixing but only an opportunity to write claims? Is this what we have to learn from this our issue?

This is my 2nd Grifos pen. I loved the first one and this one too. I was a bit apprehensive of the wood barrel expecting it to be rough, it is quite smooth to hold and not fatiguing on the finger. Great to hold (not too narrow or thick) and most importantly writes beautifully, no skipping or overflow. I have big palms so I prefer to keep the cap on. I also like the screwed on cap, which gives it a secure close, does not open up in a jacket pocket or briefcase if the pen sloshes around. I have gotten compliments from several people on this pen, this is a KEEPER.
What can I say about this pen? I'm not qualified to review this work of art by any means but I can try to describe it. Feels satisfying to hold and flick around in the hand as there is a sufficient amount of weight in the barrel. Looks just as good as it does in the photos. The finish on the wood is smooth and feels good to the touch yet retains a coarseness to contrast the smoothness of the metal. The cap rattles when not properly shut but it closes firmly each time when tightened and will not accidentally open so I cannot complain about this at all. (Edit: I fixed this by shoving the plastic insert deeper into the cap and tightening all threads.)
Writes like a dream. No issues with feed, skipping or overflow. Should have bought the 18k tip if I knew it was going to be this good but considering what I paid for it I'll wait for a future drop and buy a second, maybe gift this one to a friend.
If this drops again buy immediately. Being on the cheaper end of Griftos pens it has a lot going for it at its price. Even months after purchase I can say that it is well worth the money.

Edit: I developed a feed issue where the pen became temperamental and would stop and start at random intervals. I took the advice from a post from Stubnib where he explained that leaving the nib and feed overnight in lukewarm water with no more than a tablespoon of isopropyl alcohol would clean out all clogs in the feed. Re-aligning the nib and adjusting the tines (gently) couldn't hurt at this point. Ever since I've had no problems.

Edit #2: Developed some moderate scratchiness on the right stroke. Hard starts returned to the pen. It writes well and is sufficiently wet (when it chooses to write), but with the feedback getting a little too harsh in general I will be tuning the pen nib again.
Beautiful pen. I haven't yet inked it. I left some wiggle room in the rating to adjust after I’ve had a chance to work with it. I,m looking forward to it.
It's a lovely pen. A touch hard starting. I probably won¡t repeat as it shares the condition with a similar pen from the same manufacturer. Th nib might just need tuning.
