The only thing that is stopping from ordering this keyboard is the shipping ($36.85) for a single keyboard. And the fact that the shipping cost is not reduced if I do not include the 60% cases, switches and keycaps, which I'm not really keen of buying.
Just a simple test of the shipping cost calculation algorithm to show that the cost of shipping each kit is the same be it including or excluding the optional components:
- 100 units of pcb+keycaps+plate+switches+metal case will cost $1820.83 of shipping
- 99 units of pcb+keycaps+plate+switches+metal case will cost $1806.62 of shipping
- 100 units of pcb+plate will cost $1820.83 of shipping
- 99 units of pcb+plate will cost $1806.62 of shipping
Clearly, the only factor affecting the shipping cost is the number of kits purchased. The actual volumetric/physical weights of the parts are not factored into the shipping cost. I'm not sure if there were any blind spots, but I hope Massdrop can look into adjusting their shipping costs based on the actual weight of the kits ordered.
