What would be nice in terms of layout would be a special backspace button that sits on both the switches, allowing the user to remove pieces from the other switch, making it basically a dummy stabilizer (like Model M stabilizer barrels). I just checked and unfortunately a standard backspace keycap has the stems to connect to the stabilizer a little bit too far away from each other to do this.
MattVThose keycaps do exist, generally speaking - they are POS (point of sale) keycaps that go on top of 2, 3, or 4 switches (in a square). The problem there is that you're then dealing with twice the force, and removing the spring from one of the switch makes the force a bit lopsided since cherry switches in particular are not very good at supporting such offcenter trickery. They will tend to stick in the switch without the spring because of the friction.
Perhaps if one uses springs that are half the force of a regular one, but I'm not aware of such low force springs, and they also potentially introduce the problem of sticking due to insufficient force to overcome upstroke friction. Maybe with a lot of lube... :p

I contemplated to 3d print an 2x stem, drill/remove the 3x stem holders from an 2u backspace key, glue my 3d printed stem, however after testing the idea a bit, I came to the same conclusion as Parak, it's too stiff, it's too stupid, using a 1u Del is more logical
However, my latest idea eased my mind a lot, it's possible to drill in between the two 1u keys, and put a switch in between, then connect that switch to one of the 1u keys with wires (drill the pcb, discard the plate)
This requires a custom plate tho, however it seems easily doable, I started 3d printing plates to test the idea a bit
I guess a more logical path is to drill the pcb, but get the plates manufactured instead of printing them
If the pcb-drilling works, getting the plate done is the easy part, this might actually turn out to be a great mod for 2u lovers like me :)
If anyone else is interested, we might combine our efforts, get the plates manufactured together
