When Ethan Becker set out to create this series of KA-BAR knives, he aimed to produce a line for serious outdoorsmen and enthusiasts. The KA-BAR Becker BK21 Reinhardt Kukri is no exception Read More
My BK-21 arrived today! It's a beautiful blade, but I have no doubt it would be a hard worker as well. I also splurged on the custom sheath direct from KA-BAR.
Tom, thanks for your input! It was informative and invaluable. I think you (along with the quality of this knife) have made me into a Becker fan.....I have the desire to have a complete collection now >.<
Though, given Ethan's support of volunteer Firefighters, I may have became a fan anyway :) That's a subject which is near and dear to my heart.

I bought a Becker BK-9 for my "bug-out-bag" at least 10 years ago (I actually think it was more like 15 years, but they say memory is the first thing to go....I don't remember what the second thing is!). It ended up being used extensively for tasks ranging from processing wood in the field while camping/hunting and at home for the fireplace. A week didn't go by that I didn't use it for something. It's rare that two weeks goes by without using it even now that I've got a bunch more knives than I did back then.
I've always been a casual "collector" of knives, so shortly after getting the BK-9, I started searching on info for Beckers just to learn more about how and where they were made etc. At that time they were being made by Camillus. My search took me to Blade Forums (where the link about the BK-3 torture-test I posted goes to) where I found a whole sub-forum dedicated to Beckers. It's hard to participate there for any amount of time and not get kinda fanboi about the knives, especially with Ethan being there pretty often to answer any questions about design, blade-geometry, metallurgy, what have you, but the bottom line is that his knives just plain work, which is the main reason folks are "fans" of them. I own a ton of knives ("ton" might be literal in this instance) and don't view my Beckers as the "only" choice when I'm in the market for something new, but if they have something like what I'm looking for, I'll go with that without hesitation instead of shopping for hours. I don't own the whole line, and probably never will, but I do own more than one BK-9, BK-4, BK-2 and will eventually add another one of these BK-21s to the fold before all is said and done. I buy knives much more for using than "collecting" though, and duplicating (or more) of a specific design is more about placement between the house and out-buildings around my property than anything else.
If you are collecting per se, I suggest you start with older iterations of the Becker classic designs, the original Reinhardt/Becker Kukri being one of the "Holy Grails" of Becker collecting. I'm not positive, but I think the original was produced by Blackjack. There are forgeries out there, so be careful if older, discontinued models is what you end up going for.
Glad my post was of some use to you (or anyone else). Use that thing in good health.
I agree completely. If you go back and read the description, you'll find the bit that mentions EDC is referring to the kukri's traditional use in Nepal. I don't think anyone would suggest this as an EDC item in the U.S. and the description here certainly doesn't.
I'm Canadian and I'm picking mine up at my mail drop in Point Roberts, WA. This is EDC outside of cities and towns. If you are in less populated areas, in the woods, you can carry this edc. There is no specific law forbidding it, but it could be questionable as it may cause concern and fear among the public.
TrentTheWandererFrankly Trent your mistaken.
1095 CV isnt regarded as stainless. Thats an error. Ask any knut.
The Bk21 outclasses the condor in every way.
TrentTheWandererDespite the MD description, 1095CV is not a stainless steel. It is a carbon steel that Kabar has a lengthy experience with getting the heat treatment just right on their blades. It’s the primary steel Kabar has used since their start making US Military knives.
This is an odd looking kukri. The original kukri I've seen have all had the angle further from the handle. The purpose of that angle is provide a "hacking" portion of the cutting edge that is positioned to work with a flick of the wrist. The further that angle point from the wrist, the more power that can be generated - kind of like swinging a golf club. It is unclear how this configuration is supposed to work. Of course one could simply slash with the full swing of the arm, but I'm not sure that would be any more efficient than swinging a machete. Anybody have an explanation?
So I'm in. Sold. Love it even when I was going to get the condor. C'mon its a Becker!! But can someone tell me how the Crovan steel compares against the 1055 Cold Steel machete and the Condor 1075?I'm not trolling. Just want to get to know the blade better and what to expect.
LazarusLong1095 has a bit more carbon in it (I think .95% vs .75%), and Beckers add a bit more chromium (for slightly better corrosion resistance) and vanadium (for added toughness), hence their term Cro-Van steel. Beckers generally have a good heat treat for their 1095 as well. The end result being a blade that is slightly tougher to sharpen than 1075, but will hold it edge much better, while being able to take a significant beating.
jikerThanks. The forums on the net were a conflicting. So this straightens me out. Hopefully also helps folks above decide whether the Becker is a better buy than stuff from other places.
Beckerhead444Troll? All I've done is offer alternatives to other md users. Exposure that I appreciated when it was revealed to me. You have done nothing but be defensive over some product you had no hand in creating. You have made one point that contributed to the discussion of this product. I suspect its because you dont really have anything of value to say.
bedpI appreciate being made aware of other choices. Then I can do the research and decide which option is best for my needs. Bedp is in no way a troll, as another poster has incorrectly suggested.
Really wanted to jump on this drop. Even at lowest price + shipping, it's not a great MD deal. I can pay $4 more and have it on my doorstep in 2 days. Bummer.
